Changes at Fresh 102.7?

AllAccess is saying the station is now running jockless, and is airing an announcement that there will be changes on Monday. The way the article is worded, my impression is that this will be more a tweak, than a major change in direction. It indicates the station may be called New 102.7, which would make good use of their WNEW callsign.
Perhaps the station may tweak the music to sound less similar to rival WPLJ? I recall reading that the Hot A/C format is in somewhat of a slump, in many markets.

Not in Chicago. Mix is doing well there, but it's the only station in that format. Not the case in NYC.

Let's face it...WNEW has been a dog for a long time. I'm sure there are those who'd pine for it to return to rock. But I really think that time has passed.
 
There quite recently had been a discussion on another forum about an overlooked/untried format getting wonderful shares.

The market was not NYC ; it was in South America. Bu there are something like 200 stations audible in the place.

What with all the programming savvy and position jockeying prevalent among the clusters, it's unlikely that any such new (no pun) format is going to sneak into NYC and dominate. Particularly within a cluster itself.

Merely a thought here, if what Barry suggests might be more than a tweak ...... CHR ?
 
CHR now way. Too much CHR leaning stations now, KTU, Z100 offcourse. Their is no room for another CHR, Amp Radio mind you.

Considering the lack of ratings, maybe they would "Freshen" up their format again?? Inquiring radio minds want to know... :)

I'm with you on this one - even though I'm from the "pine for it to return to rock" group - i don't think WNEW-FM 2.0 could sustain in the market. Besides which, half their jocks are dead, and the others - Richard Neer's doin well with the 'Fan (Harris Allen, too) - Elsas would probably go for it - and Schwartz? considering his recent history, I think he would welcome the opportunity...as long as they let him do a Red Sox thing on Super Bowl Sunday.... :)
 
Listening to Fresh, it looks like they're going commercial free...not a single commercial the last two hours.

Also, they have several different promos running for the Monday morning flip/tweak, including a snoring one where they claim they will "wake us up"...a switch to CHR? But WBMP recently flipped from Top 40 to Alternative. Why would Entercom tweak to a Top 40?

Lastly, the "New" name wouldn't really make sense. Albeit the station was a stunt, "101.9 FM New" sounded pointless, and it was a stunt. The WNEW calls are simply legendary, and doubt they'll have meaning for whatever launches Monday.

PS I will be recording the launch then.
 
Would be nice for them to evolve into a WMMR approach, like back in the day when they were both owned by Metromedia. If it wasn't for them being co-owned with K-Rock in the 90's they might of still been around.

I doubt it. Before they were co-owned, WNEW had already fallen from grace. There had been talk of them going classic rock at one point, but WAQX beat them to it. They tried a harder rock approach, and that didn't work either. All the best known DJs were gone before CBS brought the two stations together.

I'd lean towards AC, maybe even Soft AC. One of their stingers which I heard a little bit ago said, "Your mom worked with Lite. You can take something NEW to your job, starting Monday.” Clear jab at WLTW. And Soft AC would work magnificently between WLTW and WCBS-FM. Either way, it has been a while since Lite FM has been threatened. We shall find out how threatened WLTW really is Monday morning.

On the other hand, Entercom flipped one of their country stations in Seattle to soft 70s rock, and it worked for 6 months. Then the audience got bored with the music.

Yep, the hints we're getting don't give us many details. We get the big picture that their format will aim at dethroning WLTW; not much more than that.

And KSWD, 94.1 The Sound is doing alright, middle of the pack in the Seattle ratings, 3-4 range. Markets like San Francisco (KISQ) and Miami (WFEZ) have top-3 soft AC performers. Could New York be the next market? I'd personally love to see such a station. How practical ratings-wise it'll be, I don't know.

True; I think adding another older force wouldn't necessarily be too bad. What if they really make a run at Lite? Soft AC would, in my opinion, be the only route to make that run. Its all a juggling act with the demos, money, ratings, and more.
 
Little update: all their sweepers look to have been updated, with “tomorrow” subbed in for Monday. But no specific time for launch in any sweeper that I’ve heard.
 
“A new chapter of the 102.7 history is written, tomorrow.” New sweeper just played. Maybe not a very-subtle change?
