Changes at KBXX?

I heard a spot during a stopset this evening which said something along the lines of "Changes are coming to KBXX. KBXX changes forever in 5 days."

Anyone know whats up?

I heard that today too. I wonder what it is? hopefully something better. Maybe online listening like some of the other Radio One Stations.

Not that it likely means much, but thebeat979.com was registered on March 4th. I dunno if Radio One would change reimage it as the beat, though. Who knows....

That's probably for KBFB 97.9 THE BEAT in Dallas-Fort Worth.

I noticed that KBXX was listed as "Top40/R" in the trends that were released today..... Was it always listed this way?

Most stations like KBXX, that play mostly Hip-Hop/Rap, as opposed to R&B, are listed as CHR/Rhythmic. It's a real fine line. At the advice of Bucwhyl on the DFW boards, I listened to K104 last time I was up North, near Tyler. They sound more like a CHR/Rhythmic, than KBFB, which is classified as such there, and KBXX sounds more like a Mainstream Urban station these days. A matter of fact, THE BOX sounds as good as I've ever heard them recently. They seem to be playing a decent amount of R&B, which is a good sign.

I hope they don't make many changes. If they do, I hope it is MORE R&B and LESS Hip-Hop & Rap.

Well, I noticed in the new Trends on R&R's site, that both KBXX and KBFB are now listed as "Urban". That must have just happened. As a matter of fact, I noticed that "CHR" has been dropped in front of stations classifying themselves as "Rhythmic", such as KPTY.

Well your first clue is that the liner says KBXX instead of The Box or 97-9 The Box.....

I am pretty sure I know what it is. I think they are going to broadcast on the internet like some of their sister Radio Stations at Radio One. And I think I heard Mad Hatter on the morning show talking about know the whole world can here their little group sing their crazy songs on the internet, so he kind of gave it away. I was thinking that in the first place, but I hope its that and something else.

It seems like web streaming isn't really worthy of drumming up suspense in listeners....but then again, this is radio...

Maybe The Box is changing their name to The Beat, simulcasting KBFB here in Dallas, and dumping one of the airstaffs in order to save money.......

Seriously though, I don't think they would make such a big deal out of streaming since K-Soul here in DFW streams, and you wouldn't even had known it, if they had not ever mentioned it on their commercials.

I seriously doubt that. KBXX has been near or at the top of the ratings for many years now. Mad Hatta's Morning Show (although not my cup of tea) is one of the most popular in the city. I know Radio One did it at KMJQ by ousting popular Morning Show "Funky" Larry Jones & Company and JJ Williams overnight show, but I just don't see them going down that road with KBXX. Dallas and Houston are VASTLY different markets. I don't see KBFB's shows doing well on KBXX and vice versa. But this is the age of Radio Companies making incredibly stupid decisions, I won't rule that scenario out entirely.

It was just a joke......

Yeah, but you'd be surprised how many of those jokes came true. Some broadcasting companies are just that damn stupid when they see how much they can save. The problem is, they don't think about the money they are also going to lose.

The only thing that would make sence to me would be a station re-image that could turn out to be a huge mistake. It doesnt make any sence to hype a web stream to this magnitude. CBS didn't do it when they started the internet stream with their cluster of stations. I would be totally shocked if they completely blew the thing apart and totally re-format to a Jack FM or any other variety hits cosidering they have been at the top of the charts in Houston for a long time running.
