Changes At KFI

Art, you probably remember when Gary Owens was on KFWB in 1961-62 before moving over to KMPC. Gosharooties, that's right...and he was downright insegrevious too. One of the fictitious characters that he portrayed was "Earle C. Festoon," an obvious nod to Earle C. Anthony. And please get together with Jim and update that book! And be sure to save me a copy.

So can we finally admit (after reading this and the KABC feed) that we have run out of radio talent in SoCial and maybe this country?

No implication concerning Mr. Hilliker presumed or taken. My own familiarity with KFI centers around the book I authiored on its founder almost twenty years ago

What is the title of your book? Is it available, or perhaps "discoverable" on ebay?

Earle C Anthony – Renaissance Man of Los Angeles --- it was done for Packard afficanado Staurt Blond and the Earle C. Anthony Car Club. It was based on interviews wth former associsates and ccess tothe scrapnooks from Anthony's PR firm. It was never finalized because of some gaps in the press/radio wars of the thirties and some other issues. After we did the Stimuland booth with KFI in 1998 I had a stroke in 1999 that turned my life upside down and we never went totally public. As far as I know its not on ebay but maybe this summer I'll try to update it as a e-book.

KFI tied with KNX for ninth place in the most recent Nielsen Audio ratings but KFI was still carrying Limbaugh for part of that four-week period. David might be able to answer this question---or at least make a halfway decent guess: Have the majority of Limbaugh listeners now migrated to KEIB, KTIE or KVTA...or do they continue listening to KFI for Bill Handel and Bill Carroll? Limbaugh's anti-Obama rhetoric had really gotten tiresome and repetitious and I like the "live & local" concept, but I don't think dropping Limbaugh will help KFI's ratings in the long run.

I hope the effects of the stroke are behind you.

The book sounds like a real treat, and hope you are able to make the content available. If I can help in any way, count on my assistance.

This thread is titled "Changes At KFI." Last night I turned on Tim Conway Jr.'s show. He was in the middle of yet another "What the hell did Jesse Jackson say?" I turned off the radio. The one change I most want to see at KFI is for Conway to end this tiresome bit. Yeah, we know that Jackson doesn't enunciate very well but making a game out of deciphering his mumblings was amusing for only the first few days. Conway's been doing this for far too long.

Yeah, we know that Jackson doesn't enunciate very well but making a game out of deciphering his mumblings was amusing for only the first few days. Conway's been doing this for far too long.

I like the jingle he plays at the beginning of the game:

"Now it's time to play the game we've waited for all week
When we get to hear our Reverend Jesse Jackson speak
So listen close, we won't delay
What the hell! did Jesse Jackson say!"

Other than that, the game itself doesn't really float my boat...

I have to agree – based on limited opportunity to listen Thompson and Espinosa are exceeding my original expectations. To me it initially seemed that they were simply tossed together in order to accommodate three needs:

1) the creation of KEIB, now home to four of the 10 most listened two talk show hosts in America – including Dave Ramsey
2) Bill Carroll’s move to 10:00
3) Keeping John and Ken from indefinitely having to do five hours daily, which isn’t their desire

Fortunately my early skepticism was misplaced.

Thanks to the excellent backup from the KFI news department, newly augmented by the fine efforts of David Cruz, the “live and local” synergy appears to be working. Keeping the momentum going would in my opinion be facilitated by the addition of perhaps two additional field reporters. This would allow ongoing thematic coverage of several concurrent topics across the programs of all five hosts (Handel, Carroll, Thompson/Espinosa, John/Ken and Conway).

Another move might be to look at the best role for Carlos Amezcua. I think he’s underutilized trying to be “live and local” for two hours sandwiched between Dave Ramsey and Clark Howard. Ramsey is a Premiere Network host and one of the most listened to the country and I can see why CC wants him in this market. However, his program is a natural lead-in for Howard and the station's format suited to nationally syndicated shows even with KFI supplying news and traffic..

So what about Amezcua? He could be part of the KFI news team 2-3 days a week with his own weekend program like Gary Hoffman and David Cruz. He could also be fill-in host for the “core five” when they are on vacation.

Inter-program synergy (Howard and Saavadra with segments in Handel, investigative news spanning the entire daytime/evening schedule, etc) is the kind of thing KFI was noted for in the “glory days” of Harrison Holliway. Never heard of him? Well, he died in 1942, so that’s understandable. But he believed that stations should deliver programs that would draw audiences, not just have “format.” And he did it well.

He initially built KFRC in San Francisco for Don Lee, but that job lost its luster as production shifted to Hollywood. This facilitated his being hired KFI/KECA owner Earle C Anthony. Until his untimely death due to heart problems Holliway helped KFI become the dominant force in Los Angeles broadcasting. KFI today needs his kind of creativity. He understood that people listed to the programs offered by the station, not just a signal.

Today is August 28, 2014. KFI's Tim Conway Jr. just announced that in the 7:00 hour he'll be playing "What The Hell Did Jesse Jackson Say?" Maybe if listeners would quit calling in to try to decipher Jackson's garbled speech, Conway would retire the game. It ceased to be amusing or entertaining many many years ago. Now it's just tiresome. Does anyone know if Jackson has heard Conway's show? I wonder why he hasn't demanded that KFI put a halt to such an obviously demeaning game.

Interesting question. Jackson has his own weekly two hour program distributed by Premiere Radio Networks and heard in Los Angeles on KFI's sister station KEIB. All are units of Clear Channel.

This being the case one would presume he knows. Perhaps Jackson has the attitude that having his name publicized is more important than the context? Or perhaps the ratings for the feature are through the roof?

Personally I find the feature annoying and boring. KFI is #1 on my dash board button but if I'm driving at 8:00 on Thursday I hit another button. But then I don't fit Tim Conway's target audience demographic.

What's funnier than watching a train wreck??? Jesse Jackson... 'chief mush-mouth'. haha

Another change at KFI: After three years of hosting a Saturday- and Sunday-afternoon program, Lisa Ann Walter has exited. She has appeared in many movies and tv shows, including Bruce Almighty, The Parent Trap and War Of The Worlds, and supposedly left KFI in order to focus on her acting career. But did she quit?...or was she fired?

According to her twitter feed and Facebook page as well as Wikipedia she quit and possibly has something brewing we'll hear about in mid-September.

Its not generally good to speculate about alternatives to official information in matters like this unless you have solid basis. In this case none has appeared.

Today you get two posts for the price of one! Some of us have complained about the ever-increasing number of commercials running on KFI and other stations. I seldom listen to KLOS but today my neighbor had the station on while he worked outside. Near the end of a very lengthy commercial break, a taped voice announced, “Here is the last commercial.” Many FM stations have commercial blocks of ten minutes or longer and many listeners tune to another station as soon as the first commercial begins. I wonder how many listeners actually heard KLOS’s “last commercial”? And how do the advertisers feel about that taped announcement?

Joan Rivers died today at age 81. KFI midday host Bill Carroll played a clip of her first appearance on The Tonight Show in 1966. He said that comedy writers almost never become successful comedians but Rivers was an exception. And I'm thinkin' about Steve Martin, who was a writer for the Smothers Brothers' 1967-69 tv series, and Tina Fey, who became a Saturday Night Live writer in 1997 and was promoted to head writer two years later. They seem to have done well as comedians. Another Smothers Brothers writer was Rob Reiner, who went on to co-star in All In The Family.

Here is a Joan Rivers monologue from a 1984 Tonight show when she was guest host:

Woody Allen was a comedy writer and a standup comedian prior to films. Mel Brooks wrote for "Your Show of Shows", and Johnny Carson wrote for Red Skelton in the 50's. So there are probably others who wrote comedy before becoming comic stars.

Did you see the tv news coverage of the September 8 ceremony at the legendary Chinese Theater in Hollywood? Mel Brooks put his handprints and footprints in cement.....and added a sixth finger to the imprint of his left hand! Always a joker! :)

On AllAccess.com is a notice that begins, "KFI is looking for a BIG personality, energetic, full-time sports anchor who will play an integral role with the top-rated Bill Handel Morning Show."

Is Rich Marotta retiring? Is he going to another station? Is he leaving radio to concentrate on announcing boxing? Does anyone know?

And look! We're back on topic. :)
