Changes at KIOA

Hi SpeedyB,

hmmm 80's music being played on KIOA!? Wow, if that is true, that kinda makes me wonder if KIOA is now looking at us people who were a child of the 80's, among the baby boomers now  Damn, thats a scary thought :p No offense to those who are, it just makes you think of time "Slipping into the future". We are not getting any younger man ;D I keep thinking of the signs of the times when I have to show or explain how a turntable works and what a record is occasionally to college students ::) It's kinda funny. Back to the potential 80's track being played on KIOA, are you sure it wasn't a song that might have been from a fringe of the 80's? Like around 1978-79? Just wondering.
Anyway, I couldn't resist not replying to this and adding my halarious outakes to this if it is infact true. :p I will be listening from time to time. Peace!

The first post was in error. There has been no 80s music played as of now anyway, that could change very soon. Jingles have just now (10/01) changed away from "The Greatest Hits of the 60s and 70s" to "Iowa's Greatest Hits" exclusively. The jingles are also a different package. "Iowa's Greatest Hits" is not new but now they are using that and saying "The Greatest Hits of All Time" which is new. I think this is going to be a slow progression. Wouldn't be surprised to hear an early 80s song in the near future.

Not true. There hasn't been as much as many other oldies stations, but there's 80's music on KIOA.

I would beg to differ. There really hasn't been any music from 1980s on KIOA (look at their playlist from today, or any other day)
http://www.yes.com/log/?station=KIOA

I invite you to find a song that is from the 80s on their playlist. They didn't play any last week either. I'm not saying they won't soon since there is already a change in their imaging...but as of now they are not.

I have a better source: Mediabase. I can pull up the monitor of the year to date and see songs like "Kokomo," "Freeway Of Love," and "Jack & Diane," et al.

I am not familiar with them but I can assure you those songs are not being played on KIOA. What I am guessing that they are doing is using a generic listing of similar formats not the actual KIOA log. I have been listening for the last two weeks all day and checking yes.com which seems to be pretty accurate (KIOA uses this service on their OWN website). Can anyone else pipe in here - KIOA is NOT yet playing 80s music!!!!!

Mediabase actually monitors stations; it's not a "generic listing." You can get the same time-sequence as Yes.com, but also pull up last 7 days, year-to-date, et al. Prior to being bought by Billboard (BDS/Neilsen, actually), it's what Radio & Records used. All Access uses many of their reports.

Examples

11:28p 9/29 Against The Wind - Bob Seger - 1980
10:55a 9/16 When She Was My Girl - Four Tops - 1981
9:29a 9/2 You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins - 1982
11:27p 8/18 Hurts So Good - John Mellencamp - 1982

11:28p 9/29 Against The Wind - Bob Seger - 1980
10:55a 9/16 When She Was My Girl - Four Tops - 1981
9:29a 9/2 You Can't Hurry Love - Phil Collins - 1982
11:27p 8/18 Hurts So Good - John Mellencamp - 1982

I can see this happening. 9/29 and 8/18 were Saturday nights when a syndicated program is being aired. The other two songs were 60s related...You Can't Hurry Love by Phil Collins is a remake from 1966 Supremes and the Four Tops were certainly most popular in the 60s.

I just don't want someone to get the impression that Madonna, Poison and Whitney Houston are getting airplay on KIOA.

Would you not agree that the examples you gave are few and far between?

Yeah, I am with DSM Guy on this one.

The dates given by PBF1 were all weekends and most likely were syndicated programming or KIOA playing a reference song from that period on special occasion.
I've been listening on and off for a couple of days and I the most 80's sounding songs I have heared so far is:

1. Fleetwood Mac - You make loving fun (1977 I believe)

2. James Taylor - Your Smiling Face (Late 70's)

So they do play songs that are close to the 80's decade.

This sounds very similar to what WOLX here in Madison has done. A few months ago they started to add more 70's tunes and snuck in the occasional 80's hit, they continued to use "Good Times, Great Oldies" but also started using "Your Greatest Hits." The transition period lasted about a month and they dropped "Good Times Great Oldies" and use "Your Greatest Hits" exclusively now. The music appears to be mostly late 60's and 70's now but you can expect at least 3 to 4 80's songs to be played during an hour.

Songs I heard yesterday on KIOA:

Micheal Jackson- Rock With You

Eddie Money- Baby Hold On

The Commadores- Brick House

Gary Wright- Dream Weaver

(All 70's tracks mind you)

You wouldn't have heard these songs even last week. Not a 'youngsy' station anymore. It's definately moving in an 80's direction.

From a Saga insider: "TIM FOX IS BEING SNEAKY, SO WATCH OUT FOR SUBTLE CHANGES IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS!!"

I must admit, Saga is doing a VERY good job at this, by not making this change overnight and upsetting loyal listeners..

I also noticed KIOA is announcing a new 70s Saturday night show. I imagine that they will end the one on 102.5 within the next few weeks if not now. Maybe by this time next year KIOA will have the 80s night on Friday? Geez that's wild to think about!!

Casey Kasem has syndicated old countdowns from the 70s (and 80s) that run on various stations, including KOKZ in Waterloo. That would be a good addition for Saturday or Sundays.

One more thing, DMRG's website lists all their stations and in parenthesis has the format type. Guess what? None listed for KIOA. They don't want to call it oldies anymore but don't want to freak people out by putting something new, or they simply just didn't know what to call it - OR - most likely the station is in transition (we all know that) and something will be listed there later.

Drove through Central Iowa today, and KIOA sounded as bland and inoffensive as ever.  Perhaps more so now that they pushed Youngsie out the door.

Actually, I shouldn't say "as ever".  There was a time when KIOA was as good as it gets.  We all know times change, but even when it morphed to oldies station, it used to be clearly one of the better ones anywhere.
