Changes at KIRO TV

Saw on tvnewser.com that Gulstan Dart, KIRO TV's morning news anchor is leaving KIRO after 5 years for a gig in Sacramento.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Rick Van Cise move from the weather desk to the news desk (while Rick is a very good weatherguy, I always thought he made a better news anchor) and Todd Johnson return to morning weather...

Well that would be beyond cool!

Rick is a fine newsman. Worked with him many years ago, and he has a great sense of the immediate. Plus, Todd Johnson is a class act. Never knew why KOMO canned him.

Gulston Dart...You're LA bound, I'm sure. Ever think of changing your name though?

Worked here. Might even be Gulstan's real name. if so, he gets BONUS points for sheer balls.

Besides, Gulstan Dart is cool. Simple as that. Because I said so...

KIRO put Todd's bio on their website under the weather section. I guess he's on a salary, and not just freelancing.

This means that KOMO's morning team from a few years ago is now entirely at KIRO (Margo, Rick, & Todd). Meanwhile, the revolving door on KOMO's morning show has kept spinning.

Who at Komo is making all these stupid decisions. The Mariners, Todd Johnson back to bite them in the you know what, Natasha, selling the building, and on and on.

Yes, Todd was on radio at Komo 1000 and 101.5 and I'm sure very well liked. Where's Kevin Reece, Joe Furia, and so many others??? Smart move by KIRO.

The Seattle TV market is so in-grown. When was the last time someone high-profile was hired from out of town? Come on, someone, anyone, shake it up a bit. It's not like it is hard to get good talent to come to Seattle.

Seattle is #15 market. Why would someone "High Profile" come here? Brad Goode was pretty high profile. CNBC anchor and NBC anchor fill in, not exactly chopped liver. How about Don Carson, CNN weather man, now NWC weather guy. What are you thinking, Katie Couric, Brian Williams, maybe Bill O'. Pretty funny!!

By high-profile, I mean an anchor from a similar sized or larger market. Seattle has not imported a main anchor since Dennis Bounds back in the 90's, and Dan Lewis in the 80's, perhaps Q13 being the rare exception. I understand familiarity is important, but nobody ever seems to leave the market! It's stale. And please...Don Carson, high-profile? Now that is funny.

With a FEW exceptions, most new General Assignment reporters are from another market and sometimes from newspapers.

Anchors imported include N. Curry, D. Whitaker, M. Dardis....seems KOMO imports them and other stations then hire them after they have become "familiar". This relates to radio because it's the same way most AC stations let a CHR "warm up" the hits....!!

Freak,

Who wants to come to a market that couldn't keep it NBA team, lost to frikkin Oklahoma city, baseball team ready to go to Tampa Bay, and did lose it's football team for a bit to LA, saved only by a super billionare. Thats the joke!! Yeah, we're the big leagues here.

Carson, much better known than Dennis who?

Seattle is just a small stone on the way up. We've sent many to the big leagues.

While I lament the loss of the Sonics, I'm not sure what losing an NBA team has to do with the desirability of a market for TV journalists. Seattle is known as one of the places people WANT to come to. Have you spent anytime in places like Cleveland, Buffalo, or even Texas? People like Dan Lewis, Jean Enerson, and Dennis Bounds have had opportunities to go to bigger markets, yet they stay here. Sorry, I don't buy your argument that Seattle is small potatoes. It is the major city of the Pacific Northwest, and my whole point is the market is stale mainly because people do not want to leave.

I understand that Seattle can SEEM somewhat stale. However, it's so heads-and-tails above similar-sized markets such as Phoenix!!! You wouldn't believe what passes for a news anchor or a news reporter in Phoenix. Some of the newest "reporters" are right out of college!!! When I visit Seattle and see reporters like Linda Brill or Linda Byron or Essex Porter or Chris Legeros, I know that they know Seattle. It's not just an extra entry on their resume. I was doing some research on the eruption of Mt St Helens and I realized that there are still reporters on Seattle television who were around during that time (Jean Enersen, Jeff Renner, Essex Porter, Linda Brill, Steve Pool, etc.)

Point well taken. I actually like the fact that there are some verteran reporters in Seattle. I would just like to see some new blood in the anchor chairs every once in awhile. And you also help make my point. There are "transitional" markets like Phoenix. Probably add markets like Sacramento, Las Vegas, and perhaps Denver. Then there are "stationary" markets. Seattle is definitely one of them, along with San Francisco, Boston, Minneapolis.

I'm sure this guy would love to work in Seattle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsubwAuzJl4

I would love it if KIRO TV hired Sandy Hill back to anchor the news. She lives here, looks great and she is more than qualified. It would be great to have her back.

Sandy Hill?

Wow, I didn't know she was still kickin. I believe she at one time climbed Mt Everest. Maybe she could do news on the new oldies station.

Why not bring back Lou Dobbs, Aaron Brown, Katie Haufman. (little play on order),
Peter Alexander, Nick Walker, Natasha Bedingfield(just kiddding)Curry, Larry Lujack, Glenn Beck, who else am I missing???

I saw Sandy Hill on a KIRO TV retrospective that I happened to stumble across over the weekend...she actually looked pretty darn good considering I watched her on the Big Money Movie 40 years ago.
