Changes at Kiss Utica

What's going on in Utica?

Last few mornings, some new guy's been doing mornings on Kiss. He SUCKS. Barely says a thing when he comes on the air... sounds very cheap. "You want a weather report? Look out the window." What? OK, it's funny once, but EVERY weather break? Come on. I hope that's just temporary, but usually people aren't allowed vacations during the book... and there's apparently been changes on other dayparts too. (Why isn't Kook on middays?) I think I see Kiss's ratings falling even further down the toilet. I hope they didn't toss Stew's name out of the Rolodex ... I heard a lot of people had issues with him, but at least Kiss's numbers were halfway decent back then. (Where did he ever wind up, anyway?)

They've basically taken a once-great station and set it out on the back porch in the rain like a bastard red-headed stepchild. It's strange because Utica's definitely ghetto enough to support a CHR station, but according to Arbitron, the numbers keep shrinking...

Kook is now doinig bob and tom board op on WOUR and news for the other stations, he is off kiss. Helping with production, and his ebay shopping.
The morning stuff on kiss is a stunt, making way for Roadrunner and Kenny the promo guy to move to mornings. Shawn Andrews to Afternoon. Stew works for Galaxy in Albany as Ops for their classic county and classic rock/talk. A station like kiss needs promotions everyday, they have none, not kenny's fault. Just no freakin' money to spend. And let's face it, no one wants to buy what is considered a kids station. The guy stunting on kiss is probably Adam the bulls new man servent. No more part timers on kiss because of the previous mentioned man servent. Good idea to do a night show on stations at have 3 watt night power.

You hit it right on with that station and other CC stations, no promotional money to spend on anything and people multi-tasking through the roof.

KISS's best numbers were 8.9 two or three years ago when the station was on 102.5 and also on 97.9/105.5 before the country disaster was put on 102.5. Keep in mind this is also when KISS did big promotions like Survivor Island and KISS The Car and had four live shifts on the air. There used to be big budgets for that stuff NOW they have NO MONEY at all to spend. Over time CC has taken away their live local shifts with voicetracking, weekends are long gone and you have a staff of three working there and multi-tasking eighteen different ways over two-three stations. (Roadrunner alone is programming two stations, doing imaging and doing a live airshift). These guys have plenty of great ideas but with no budget and lack of support you can only do so much.

but who did not see this coming from a mile away. Runner and kenny in the afternoon, come one how long was that going to last. Plus with kook now on wour, it is only common sense. why they have to stunt is beyond me. with kook gone only other jock was andrews.

Then why don't they just leave and go elsewhere? There was recently an opening at Regent, and they always seem to have pretty good promotions, and more live shifts.

If I was ever working in the same conditions CC Utica is facing, I'd find somewhere better to work. I know these guys have been with Kiss for years and it's probably hard to walk away, but at the end of the day, you gotta look out for number one.

How much longer they gonna keep paying Linda to do an airshift on a station that didn't get any better numbers than it had when it was jockless?

Goes back to same thing: no marketing dollars. These guys need full out marketing campaigns with cash to spend to compete but when you rely on TV trade and tiny newspaper trades what does it get you. When you have NO money allocated for any of this like CC allocates you can't be in the same league as Regent.

No Marketing Dollars?

> Goes back to same thing: no marketing dollars.

Gee, the decline in marketing dollars seems to have happened just about the time the shi- -er Dave Universal hit the fan (aka Eliot Spitzer). Makes you wonder where those marketing dollars came from originally, huh?

Kiss was a good station when Stew had it. Now it sucks. Utica is sorely missing a local morning drive show. Fat Frank tries, but it don't work.

How long beofre BOB hits Utica?

Bottom line like it or not, Fat Frank is not a morning show. CC should try BOB, God knows they've tried everything else under the sun with spectacular results. And we know there is zero chance that CC will invest in anything for Utica, gotta love "Less is More", it's only 10 minutes but 29 units.

Again KISS was a good station when Stew had it because there was money put into it. They had a live morning show with Linda and Kook and nights with Roadrunner and Kenny plus Stew on afternoons. These guys marketed themselves and had product to giveaway and money to allocate towards promotions and giveaways. Over time CC took away the marketing dollars and made people move around and take on the corporate stance of multi-task or get kicked out.

The other factor here is that KISS did its best on 102.5 when it was getting at its peak a 5.7-6.2 on a 50,000 watt stick. (They received accoring to my numbers a 8.9 in 12+ the spring/summer when there was a trimulcast on 97.9/105.5 after the take over). Also need to look at the fact they did pretty well when 94.9 went away and 18-34's didn't have any other options. There was a downward spiral in 2004-2005 in the 12+ numbers for those who look at it overall and the station is also on a 6,000 watt stick now that doesnt even come in downtown Utica or east Utica. You are right KISS was a good station in that Stew era when it had label support, four live shifts and a staff of weekenders who would do anything it took to be on the team. Too bad times have changed as they according to a post above lost weekends and went from a staff of 12 to a staff of four who now multitask all across the cluster. Can't win with that!
