Changes at KPOO

It appears the pandemic has given some listeners greater appreciation of public/community radio stations. Earlier this year, KCSM had their best pledge drive in some time. And this month, KPOO well exceeded their year-end fund-raising goal -- they were hoping to get $75,000 and ended up with over $110K.

Meanwhile, KPOO has changed their lineup a bit. Several of the hosts who have been MIA during lockdown have been taken off the schedule. Patricia "Peppermint Patty" Nobile's Mon evening show "Wheels" is gone (she hasn't done the show since March), and "Grinders Grooveyard" has been moved up a half-hour to 8pm. And the Thurs nite reggae show "English Pound Radio" has also been removed, replaced by "Thurs Night Non-Stop with JJ". Whether JJ will be in-studio live or just programming a jockless 3 hours of Soul music is unclear.
 
Speaking of KPOO. Their reception is horrible where I lived. I lived in the SW side of San Francisco city limits and barely could get this station. I think this station best coverage is within the city limits of San Francisco from Bernal Heights to Sausalito/Tiburon. From downtown Oakland to eastridge of Mt. Sutro, Twin Peaks, Diamond Heights and Richmond neighborhood. All other place in the south and southwestern parts of San Francisco is spotty to nonexistent.

Indeed, I frequently lose them west of Twin Peaks (Stonestown etc).
 
Also meant to mention that KPOO appears to be using (or at least experimenting with) Spinitron's new show-archiving service (which was begun right after Radio Free America went belly-up; KCSM also uses it). Not sure how much extra $$ Spinitron charges for that.

They've always been a "shoestring" operation "shoehorned" into the very crowded Bay Area NCE band plan. I think they were originally 90 watts or so. Good to see such diverse programming continuing on the dial.

It's not clear what's happening with KPOO's longtime Monday nite oldies show, "Grinder's Grooveyard" but it appears to be in limbo. Host "Rockin' Jim" Rigsbee has been MIA for the last 3 weeks (no substitute host in his absence). Last time he was on (Apr 26th) there were many technical snafus and I can't tell if there's a connection between the 2 things. But I messaged the station and am awaiting a reply.
 
Terry Collins, one of KPOO's founders and longtime host of shows "Spirit of Joe Rudolph" and more recently "For the People", passed away last Wed nite.
 
A couple more interesting changes: The Autumn King, who in addition to his live Sun nite show has been programming the automated music programming from 1a to 9a Monday mornings, will now be on LIVE each Monday morning from 6 to 9, and we'll get automated oldies (or old archived shows) Sun from 10pm to 6am.

The station is also running vintage Grinder's Grooveyard shows on Monday nites; apparently there's a huge archive of those. Some of the ones I've heard recently have gone back as far as 2014.
