VERY quiet rumblings that Indy Market GM [Chuck Williams?] and Promotions Director were let go days ago, and a very tight lid has been kept on the situation.
Anyone heard this, or anything different? Confirmed? Complete crap?? ???
Same thing with Vince Fruge' and the hag. Rumors then were the pay to play money was involved.
Vince had a special phone line installed directly to his desk for music reps. This way they could always get in touch with him with no office staff in the way. No listing, no switchboard, just Vince or the hag.
The TLC manager always made the majority of his salary from music money. This is a known and given.
I noted things changed when Emmis bought the station but after it switched to the "Urban Radio Specialty" company payola had a revivola.
The PDs got "things" as did the other stations across the US. Things and money. Radio One agreed they had received such and settled with the justice department but there was never an indication it came to a halt.
Williams seemed altogether different from the other GMs so I would not speculate that was his reason for departure necce3ssarily.
We kind of drifted here - from late breaking rumors to ancient payola practices. Yes there were under the table deals before Emmis; trade-outs for merch and 'door-deals" gone wild. It was easier to conceal when stations were not publicly owned. To my knowledge, it had to be cleaned up...under Emmis and under RO.
To talk about Chuck Williams departing and Vince Fruge's payola in the same thread is not being fair to a pretty decent broadcaster....refering to Chuck, of course.
So...back to the point: what is the truth on the departures?
The Fruge deal had payola involved reportedly. The fact that that was hushed up could just be the way Radio One operates in any situation. Chuck Williams doesn't fit the same profile of Vince Fruge'. I find other broadcasters in town with an excellent rating on Mr Williams. He has never been in the same field of having the payola contacts. In fact there was never a reason to believe this.
The station has had these problems (NY Settlement) is the only reason this was mentioned. WTLC has a lo0ng history. The GMs prior to Emmis made more on record deals than their salary. The Settlement in New York over pay for play was to settle deals in all markets and none were excluded. There were no reports that the company wide policy on payola did not involve Indianapolis. Indianapolis settlement was part fo the larger settlement reportedly.
This isn't a normal company. They report they are always looking to replace white employees when possible. This is a quote from Big Momma that has been in several magazines. Williams does fit this profile.
Urban Radio has payola problems still. Maybe Williams discovered it and he got washed out as a result of reporting it?
Republished from Tom Taylor's daily piece here at RadioInfo:
Scott Davis says on Facebook "I know the economy sucks and many people would kill to have my job. But when your job is physically making you sick, you have to move on.” That’s his explanation for leaving mornings on Radio One CHR “Radio Now” WNOU (100.9) in Indianapolis. He says “I've been suffering from the worst migraines and anxiety. At first I thought these were caused by medical conditions. I changed my medications, my diet, my lifestyle and tons of other things with no relief. I had to come to terms that all my physical problems were from the stress of my work environment." The station’s searching for Scott’s successor now. The Indiana Board of Radio-Info.com is talking about the situation.
