Changes at The Fan

Wow I am suprised no one has brought this up yet. According to the KRLD website. Sean and Dan are out, and so are Pete Stein and Mike Rodriguez. And Arnie Spanier has taken Pete and Miks 6pm-10pm shift.

I hope Jones got his money upfront. This merry go round of hosts. CBS spit the bit by rushing the format on the air. How can you grow the format if you constantly are changing hosts? I won't say its a failed bit, but man. I really don't care if they figure it out. The only time I will be able to listen is during Dallas Cowboys Football.

That was what Gavin preached but since he isn't here then that doesn't happen. There's a video on YouTube floating around where gavin talks about how talk shows need time to air everything out and let the plot lines thicken, kinda like Seinfeld.

By the way, there is a new "afternoon show" and I heard Dan and Mike on there. Not sure about Pete Stein.

Opinion:

Regardless of what you think about Sean Salisbury personally, "The Fan" lost an interesting analyst when he sticks to football. On the other hand, when a 46-year-old man drifts from sports and begins running his mouth about "hot chicks" on the air, he embarrasses himself.

But as I mentioned in another post, Salisbury obviously knows football. You don't QB at USC and more than nine years in the NFL and CFL without picking up a lot of knowledge. A host without college or professional experience could not possibly know many of the things that go on in the huddle, in the locker room and off the field that Salisbury has experienced first hand.

The hiring of Spanier reminds me of something that happened earlier this simmer. When the Phillies starting pitching was a semi wreck around early July, Manager Charlie Manuel, on the subject of new blood said, "Don't give me what I have already." To me, that's what they are doing. I don't know what would be compelling listening, but I'd rather listen to Ron Barr's Sports Byline USA than what they have had on so far.

Spanier is definitely an acquired taste, if you acquire it at all.

Admittedly, his amped up, over-the-top style and grating voice would drive you nuts in a matter of minutes if you were not used to him.

But you can say the above about a lot of people. Many out of towers cannot understand how anyone could listen to Norm Hitzges.

When I first heard Jim Rome when he was local in Los Angeles, I absolutely could not take more than about 15 minutes of him no matter how compelling the content of his show might have been at that moment.

That's it. I tried staying with the Fan ever since the flip and I just can't do it anymore. With awful talent like Mondo, Dean, and Jasmine stinking up the mornings and a merry-go-round of hosts that are gone before I get to know them-I just can't do it anymore. The station is officially gone from my repertoire as of this morning. I am just a listner, with no inside knowledge about this buisness, but I know that I can't stand that station anymore. Good freaking luck to them.

Other than the cowboys game and the rangers game. I think the morning show is the only thing i can listen to. IMO.

I like the Fan, I like the concept, and I like their long term vision for the signal. They want perfection, they want the listeners, and will not be satisified until they reach the number 1 spot. It may be sloppy upfront, and all of this change is tough to swallow. However, they are doing it for a reason, and if you know something won't work...no reason to continue to do it. It is easier to make these hard changes at this time than a year from now.

If they are going to stick with the 2 yankees on that show to see how it goes.... NOTE TO BIGBY This is Texas. We don't want to have two dudes that are not from here, especially from the east coast try and tell us about our teams. You telling me there are NO local hosts that you could find? What a joke. You have a non-sports morning show, and now a all yankee drive time show that Locals have no time for. Nice work. I take it back, 990 was not the worst sports station in DFW history....The goes to "The Fan"...

I hate to defend KRLD-FM since the station is fairly unlistenable and it's incredible how poorly executed it has been from the start, but... this argument is a little silly. It doesn't matter whether or not the hosts they hire have been in the market or not; people will tune if the hosts have something interesting and entertaining to offer. The noon-3PM show (Bob & Dan) on KTCK is hosted by two guys that moved to this market from stations in Virginia and Ohio. Before coming here, neither had ever lived in Texas and they are handling the competition in their timeslot.

I remember a few weeks ago Bigby was on the air w/ Newey & Richie talking about changes to all the time shifts. I'm guessing the Jagger show is next?

I don't agree with the assertion that 'there aren't any local hosts that will work', in the sense that the listeners have proven that unless you've been here from the start of the explosion of sports radio, i.e Norm and Galloway, that anybody trying to move up from the b-team to headliner just doesn't get a chance and nobody listens. But I also agree that there is no way some NY-acccented rube is going to be taken seriously about Rangers, Cowboys, Horns, Aggies et. al. Most likely the only thing that will work is someone who has moved away and would come back to the area. Even in that case, it won't go anywhere unless people are willing to back up the statement that they want more game analysis and less schtick. Until then, nothing will take down the mighty little ticket, much less compete. One other thing folks might want to remember.. being a day one-P1 like myself, you need to go back and listen to Ticket year one that was full of callers just to hear thier own head rattle. If that was on-air now, it wouldn't last six months. At the time, however, that was what was needed to grow the fan base. The subculture got the word out, the P1 army expanded and the Ticket has become what just about every sports station wants to be. But it had to be the little seed before the tree would take root. I'm now living in Arkansas and local sports radio here is horrible, because its just a bunch off root-hog fans complaining after a loss or wanting the national championship after a win. I still listen to the ticket on the web because they add in the national with local at the right mix with man talk. Until you're willing to mainly talk schtick and the sports at the launch then you will die a slow, cruel death. Make 'em laugh, Make 'em laugh, Make 'em laugh... then you can talk about that great move by Miles Austin or why the Rangers' bats have died.

Just my take,
Pittsburgh Dave

The difference is that Bob and Dan don't sound like something you pot up for free between midnight and 6 a.m.

They are a couple of thirty something guys who share many of the same experiences of typical MTV generation adult males. They are members of the target demo.

They walk a good line between being slacker enough for their generation but also taking professional care of their broadcast. They have a good time mocking out-dated radio "rules," just as they watched Letterman make fun of traditional TV rules when they were kids.

The idea that the market won't accept non-Texans talking sports is just dumb. BaD Radio, Norm, and to a lesser degree Coop, prove that you don't need to be born in Dallas to succeed here. If that was all it took, Greg Hill would still be on the air.

Pay attention.... You don't have to be from here, but you can't be the east coast yankee everything is better there idiot that those guys are. You can't come in here with that sound and make it work. BTW: Coop was here for years before he got his own show so he knew the lay of the land, and all of his shows got taken off because nobody listened. (Although I am infact a fan) Bob and Dan went out of the way to slow play it until they were excepted, and they have a little south sound to them. Who can listen to that yankee chatter for any length of time? I'm just saying.....
