Changes at the Q

Last night I heard 93Q playing the latest from Kenye West which I thought was a little surprising. Then today, through out the day, I've been hearing quite a bit of rap and R&B which Q didn't normally used to play. Some one said on another post that Q was a Hot AC. They sure haven't been sounding like a Hot AC recently. What's going on with this station?

If they're not playing the number 3 song in the nation then they would suck. Gold Digger is a great song and it should be heard on the best station in the market.<P ID="signature">______________

I don't think 93Q was ever considered a Hot AC, at least not "technically." Any of the Arbitron ratings listings list 93Q as a CHR station. I believe that's also how the format for which they report to R&R... and R&R says you have to play a certain percentage of new music (currents and recurrents) to remain on the panel.

If someone called them Hot AC, it was probably more of a sarcastic opinion... I will agree they don't always sound 100% CHR. But they still play enough new music, and harder/rockier/CHR'ier music, and they rarely go back into the 80's or anything that's "exclusively" AC, so I wouldn't call them Hot AC either.

I think the difference is that Hot 107.9 is a "rhythmic/urban" CHR, where 93Q is just a "plain" CHR.

The trades do not really use the playlist percentage formula to determine format. Several years back, the trades tried to apply that rule and recategorize stations like WPGC, WERQ, and WQHT from CHR to urban stations. Those stations protested and renmained CHR. Thus, stations pretty much declare they are whatever format they want.
