Changes at WJRD

I was listening to WJRD (1150) Tuscaloosa today. They're now programming oldies using "The Oldies Channel", dropping adult standards for a second time. Guess it was just a matter of time.

There aren't many standards stations left. The only one left in AL I can think of is Montgomery's WNZZ. Are there any others? :-\

WCRL/WKLD is using the same service as JRD was using, timeless classics I think is what they call it, but that may change when KLD moves north soon. KLD was "Americas's Best Country" until like 3 months ago.

Oh yeah...I forgot about WCRL being standards. I didn't know WKLD was using Timeless Classics now, too. You're probably right about the KLD format...it will probably change once they move up closer to Huntsville.

Isn't it kinda strange that WJRD is using the "True Oldies Channel" When me and my dad were putting up campaign signs for Kim Drake thru Tuscaloosa about 7:30 one morning, I heard "True Oldies" on 99.1 out of Greensboro. Now in T town there will be two True Oldies stations on 99.1 and 102.1 "JRD's FM translator" ???

BTW, I do know of a few other Noatalgia stations besides WKLD.

I wonder why WKLD kicked the country off the FM?

There's still some nostalgia stations out there out of Alabama. WMPS 1210 in Memphis has some sort of standards thing going. And of course the big CHWO 740 out of Toronto would probably qualify to fit this category as well. There's even one or two on FM in Arkansas that serve the huge retirement communities in the Ozarks.

Has anyone heard this station recently? It's been about 6 months since I was in the Marianna area, but before that I hadn't heard WTOT 101.7 on the air (or their 980 AM simulcast) for at least a year. Wasn't this station bought by or in an LMA with the WRJM people a few years back? I'm trying to remember if I've heard them at all since the failed "Woman's Talk" format they tried.

Also, you could add WABF-AM, Fairhope-Mobile to the list of nostalgia/standards stations in Bama. There's also one or two in Ozark.

Oh Yeah, I forgot about the ozark stations. WOAB 104.9. They broadcast in Mono and have an oldies slant. Speaking of WTOT 101.7 in Marianna, I heard them 3 times since april (whild in the area). They have terrible audio quality, lounds like it's being played in a drum. Audio sounds worse than 99.9 WRJL in Eva, and 10 times worse than how Q100.3 WAOQ in Luverne used to sound. TOT's sister station, 100.9 WJAQ in Marianna, has an ok sound, and is an affiliate of Real Country, one of the last few Real Country's on FM I can tthink of around here.

Is that physically possible? I remember that station sounding like the audio was bounced off the moon then played through a 50¢ speaker through a tin can!

The term "pirate" sounds too harsh, like a station that plays heavy metal with profanity and anti government programming.

A more appropriate term would be "Community Broadcast Facility" ;D ;D ;D

From 5 AM to 9PM Mon-Friday B93 plays traditional Country with a Community Calendar at :35 past, Weather Twice an hr, and USA Radio News at the top. From 9PM to 5 AM, B93 carries "Music Through The Night" a mix of 60's and 70's Oldies.

The Travis Allred Morning show is pre-recorded, and airs M-F from 7-8 AM. Topics include Current events, and Ag News. Thursdays the show is Classic Country, and Fridays it is Classic Rock.


Saturdays features Programs like "Country Legends Weekend" and "Country Oldies Show"

Sundays Is a mix of Insp Country, Southern Gospel, and Christian Country, featuring programs like "Dynamite Christian Country" and "Circuit Rider Radio" out of Grenada, MS.


It takes some effort for one person to do, but it is worthwile in my opinion.

Looking at the Google Maps satellite shot of Battleground, AL, it appears there might be upwards of 100 people in your coverage area. How many businesses are in your area? How do all your listeners keep up with the frequency changes? Do you have a billboard out on the highway to advise them?

I live about 3 miles from Battleground, so my signal is a bit choppy where hills block the signal. I spent two weeks working on a handcrafted sign that hangs from the end of my driveway. I hand cut the letters, the frequency is hand painted with stencils. It actually doesn't look too bad . As soon as WBRC moves to HD, I plan to use the quiet frequency of 87.7 to further improve my coverage area. All I have to do is sand the freq off the sign and repaint the frequency. I don't have any signs on the major highways due to the fear of the wrong person seeing the sign. What I plan on doing is making some signs to place on dead end roads, so the only people that will see it will be those who live in the immediate area. With a 16 watt signal and only a 20' pole my usable coverage area is only a few miles, but I have heard it as far as 15-16 miles with a barely audible signal.

Do you know if anyone else is listening/enjoying your station or is your main purpose to be able to listen to what you want while working on your own property? I've been thinking of putting up a 10 watt transmitter so I could listen while I work on the farm, just haven't gotten around to it yet. The only neighbors that would be in the listening rage are either very old or ethnic, so they wouldn't be interested in music I would play.

For the most part I do play what I want. I do have a few listeners I know of. So far everybody says they like it pretty good, although I do have to compromise with what people want to hear, and so on. It does come in handy for work around the farm. I set up a playlist file with the songs I like arranged, and I can get back to whatever I'm doing. I have one sponsor, Moulton Stockyard, but I charge for a whole month of commercials what a local FM station charges for about two, In other Words, about .05 a commercial.

If I had a large parcel of land I'd be wanting to do the exact same thing. If it's your land you should be able to utilize a free channel to cover at least your property, without bothering "the neighbors" (who, in this case, may be coming from a hundred miles away!)

BTW, WUOA, channel 23 out of Tuscaloosa, has a CP to move to channel 6 after the digital transition, and all of Cullman county will be in the 28 dBu contour according the little map on the FCC's site. Looks like they're gonna be moving from T-town to Red Mountain!

That's right, but I've read that the audio from a DTV ch. 6 can't be heard on 87.7 FM since it will be digital too. Off topic, Fox 6 is telling people that if you live more than 15 miles from their tower you will need to get a rooftop antenna to pick up threir signal on ch. 50. These DTV signals must not travel very far, just my 2 cents.

i'm out on the other end of the county - welti - i was picking up 93.3 from hsv over anything on 93.1 ...

Z93's signal is very weak around here, Strong enough to hear, way too weak for the average listener. 933 WWFF has a clear signal here on Battleground Mtn, but once you get about a mile or so from the edge of the mountain towards Cullman, it loses momentum fast. The only place I've heard my station in Cullman is on the West side of Warehouse Discount Groceries on 157. The signal is better off to the west, though. Comes in fairly clear on 41 North of Addison, good at Jones Chapel, it can be heard with a audible signal starting on top of the hill near RE Garrison on 157. I don't want my signal to reach Cullman, though. I fear that if the people at WKUL find out, they might "play" dirty, if you know what I mean.

That sure does rain on my parade WUOA moving to Channel 6; I was counting on 87.7

Wouldn't it have been nice if WBRC had donated their existing channel 6 antenna to the University of Alabama and hung their new channel 50 antenna in another spot? Tax deductions are nice.

IF that is ever approved, it'll be interesting to see what channel WUOA will map to. You have to imagine WBRC is going to want to keep mapping (virtually) to channel 6.1, 6.2, etc.
