You don't like the way music stations present their songs which is, basically, the reason they still exist.

Keep in mind that we're seeing a big decrease in the amount of live & local DJ input in station content outside of morning drive.

So stations are responding to the demand that they shut up and play the music. But of course it depends on the station.

I see it less as a total shut-up mandate as a preference for less talk in some dayparts. One of the issues is that talk on commercial radio has generally been about things people can get easily and faster online... artist news, traffic, weather and the like. So stations can and should be very careful when they base the "local content" on things listeners have already heard or read online.

I see it more as an indication of wanting relevance. That is why the national shows like Seacreast, Bobby Bones, Charlemagne and the rest do well: they have original material, access to artists and trend-setters, and do something interesting.

The era of reading jokes from mimeographed subscription services is long past. It's about original content... or shut up.

But getting back to the poster who says he doesn't want to pay for radio, he doesn't want to use online in the car, and he just wants to hear music. The research we see says there's a large group of people who agree with him. Sure more than 70% of people stream music online. But most don't do it exclusively. There are times of their day when they like to have the playlist made for them, and just turn it on and listen. They make up part of the OTA radio audience. So if radio can grab a chunk of those people for a half hour or so a day, that's good enough. Meanwhile, Apple is investing a pile of money to give people exactly what they don't want from streaming: Yammering DJs.

You don't like streaming in the car.
You don't want to pay for.

At that point, there is no solution except to put up with aspects of the free radio services you get 'cause you have closed yourself off to alternatives.

The fact is that stations do what they think attracts the most listeners. You are in all probability in a small minority who the can't please, ever.

No -- i love music choice which is on my verizon fios system - great channel selection & no talk at all - perfect.
Also accuradio is cool too.
Obviously they arent in a car which is the bummer.

Just curious about your previous comment that radio streaming in the car is too distracting. How is your smartphone setup in your car? Have you tried using voice commands to play the stations you want? I can say stuff like “play WGBH”, “play 102.5 KTU”, “play KFI”, “pick a random country station”, or “play the top 100 songs from 1986” and the music starts playing. I find it much less distracting than glancing down at the radio (taking my eyes off the road) to select the correct preset, switch from AM to FM, seek/scan, or tune to the exact frequency while im driving in traffic.

If you’re holding the phone in your hand and trying to navigate through a streaming app while you drive, I can see how that would be very distracting (and dumb). I hope nobody here has ever done that behind the wheel :)

Dont have to glance at radio - control is on a selector on the steering wheel with all my presets/volume.
I didnt like to think about what to play when driving thats why i like the radio to do it.
Theres enough idiot drivers on the road especially now i need my concentration especially here in ny area its not like nebraska.
Everyones diff but thats what i like.

Good example - i hate seacrest - they blab about stupid stuff alot that i dont care about - the chix on the show not exactly rocket scientists.
Rather just have Z100 who simulcasts him here just play music.
