Changes at WOEZ Knoxville

For (at least) the second year in a row on the day after Christmas, one of our favorite stations, EZ 88 in Knoxville, has made changes.

Gone is the "above the standard" slogan. Now EZ 88 is our "listen at work station."

Most (but not all) of the traditional and contemporary standards are gone, while more of the '60s,'70s, and '80s AC hits have been added. To me, the new format sounds a lot like what "Timeless Classics" plays.

Personally I like the new sound. Unlike a few others on this board, I like what "Timeless Classics" plays and am glad we have something similar now. Don't forget, there already is another standards station in Knoxville (MOYL affiliate WQBB) so the music isn't disappearing from the market.

from the way you describe it, it sounds like WDUV out of Tampa or Sirius's Channel 4 "Movin Easy" If so, you're right. i'm happy to hear about this. those retro soft AC songs like barbra streisand, neil diamond, hamilton joe frank and reynolds, david soul, gene cotton, olivia newton john, etc. are becoming just as much an endangered species as beautiful music and standards, so a good move here as far as i'm concerned.

I was going to say those should be an endangered species, but with just the right mix of these songs and the real standards, something Dial Global is getting right and Useless Classics is making a mess of, I can enjoy these songs.

I haven't heard Dial Global's standards in a long, long time so I don't know what they sound like these days. I heard "Timeless Classics" for about 30 minutes while driving through Georgia a few months ago and it sounded pretty good to me. No I wouldn't call it standards, but it was better than your typical soft AC. Here we have "Music Of Your Life" which still sounds very good.

WOEZ is a rough listen now. Yes they do have a great variety of varying styles of pop music, BUT the song selection is limited. Listen for one day and you'll be impressed, but listen for the second day and you'll hear all the exact same songs. Yes that is common for commercial radio, but don't forget that WOEZ survives on donations. I don't think there are too many people willing to donate their hard earned cash to hear Atlanta Rhythm Section's "Imaginary Lover" every single day.

That song shouldn't be there at all.

I agree. They are playing a lot of songs that don't fit now. It sounds like a "Jack" format for the over 50 crowd. But, let's wait and see if things get better. It seems like they are still searching for which direction they want to take.

If you'd like to read about a Jack format for the over-50 set, go here.

It also explains where I got my name. Of course, Unforgettable Favorites was almost as bad. No wonder it's gone.

And I left one song out. "Everything I Do, I Do It for You" by bryan Admas seemed to be their number one favorite song.
