Changes at WXBT 100.1 The Beat

It appears Venom and DJ Frosty were hired over to WXBT from crosstown WHXT 103.9 and started today. I'm not sure which shift they are on, but I believe midday. Also, they have added a nightly slow jam show entitled "After Hours". With more R&B music on WXBT, this should definately open Columbia up for a Rhythmic top 40. I think this also may help WXBT's cause in beating WHXT to be the number 1 for hip-hop and R&B as well, which they have had no problem doing. DJ Frosty has plans to play more local hip-hop in his mixes which Hot would not allow him to do. Hot 103.9 just isn't the same station it used to be 8 years ago, or even 5 years ago. I think this could be the nail in the coffin for 103.9 because those were some of their best local talents. Thoughts?

I am sure ICCB has a contract to run WWE, but for gods sake at 10PM at night!!! That is just handing your audience over to Clear Channels "Beat". Maybe I am crazee, but it just does not make any sense for Hot to be airing a talk base show at night and the ratings are showing that fact... When Rainbow Radio owned Hot they blew into town like a cat 5 hurricane... I really think at first it really threw DM off, but man they were awesome when they first launched... The jocks were all the rage and put plenty of life into what was just a normal Urban format of which DM had for a long time... Here is what I compare Hot to... There was a little station up in Asheville called WLOS FM 99... On September 18th 1984 folks who woke up to their normal EZ Programing was in for quite a shock... Kiss was in your face top 40 and the jocks had one hell of a time... Brother Bill who is running Davidson's oldies 103 was one of the jocks along with John Stevens... Just like Hot they were the rage not only in western NC/SC, but four other states... The station was sold and just like Hot all of the excitement was taken away... The jocks were toned down, and the station started its downward trend until it went country in 94... What am I comparing you ask... The way the life was sucked out of those two stations... When rainbow was calling the shots you knew there was gonna be a party which was the very case with Kiss FM... Once the new owners took over in the case of hot and Kiss the once and mighty have fallen and what was once one of Columbia's biggest success stories is now just another radio station... CC1

Great post Carroll, I couldn't agree more. I never thought WXBT would be as successful as they are now. They are beginning to show true colors of being a serious Urban station. Now, what about that 97.5 chat we all were having a couple weeks ago? How many of you think one day country fans will wake up only to be shocked to turn on 97.5 and hear hip-hop and R&B? Imagine the shockwaves if something like that were to happen. I can imagine the protests at the state house. I'm sure New 92 would be there handing out flyers and free stuff since they are right down the street. LoL

Before I go to bed I had to give one final post and that is unless you know what freezes over I don't think you will see WCOS Change formats... That could all change if the CC Cluster goes up for sale, but maybe bringing in live jocks remember them!!! From the looks of it maybe a new PD could freshen things up a bit... There are a number of things COS needs to do and first and foremost stop trying to be a classic rock station that is what Fox 102 does... Most of my family who listened to WCOS has moven on... They want to hear Alan, Garth, George and not the dribble that is being played on there right now... If push comes to shove Double O could put New on 94.3 as well as 92.1 and blamket columbia with a solid signal, but right now they don't need to they are beating COS with two weaker station with their combined ratings and to those businesses and agencies that buy air time that is all they need to hear... Of course, Carroll, the operative phrase is "...along with John Stevens". John was, is and remains an innovative, fun, and extremely knowledgeable person and programmer. He had Kiss humming at the speed of light. Great talent back then, including John Rocke. I'm happy to count Stevens as a friend. Any station would be blessed to have a PD and brainchild of the caliber of John Stevens.

So who would you get? You'd probably want to stay regional...do you try to hire away someone like Roper, or bring in someone from the upstate? Go to one of the smaller, more successful stations and hire a Johnny Walker from GTR in Myrtle or Mudflap from 92.9 in Florence? Or just let the Chucktown CC crowd program both, as WEZL has always been successful? Thoughts?

Wabbit I have not had the chance to hear Mud Flap, but I remember Johnny and when me and my wife was at the beach last year although I did not get to listen to Gator much from what I heard it was very tight with lots of energy... If he were given the chance I think he could turn COS around... When I come down to visit in a few weeks Eagle is clear as a bell in NE Kershaw CO so I will check out Mud Flap... As crazy as it sounds Roper V2.0 might be a good fit for COS as well, but would CC want him... Even if he is hard to work with he did pretty good with SOC in QC... JMO CC1
