Changes at Y102.9?

I was noticing Jenn Lumaye (WPTF Bill's Wife??) is now doing mornings and Jim Harrison is only on air for one shift, which is Saturday's 10am-3pm.

Does anyone know what is going on? ???

Thanks

Hey Stuart!

Pretty much what you described is what's going on. Y102.9 is staffed by "live"
part-time DJs. It works out well for us. Jim wants to concentrate on some other things which
don't allow him to get up at 4am every morning. He's still very much part of the team.
Jenn is doing mornings now.

WKIX is on AM, while many would like to see "Channel 85" return, don't look for it to put a dent into a ratings book anytime
soon, i'm sure Don Curtis is a fan of this station in the days when Pat Patterson, Mike Mitchell, Ron McKay, Charlie Brown &
others made them famous, and i'm sure 850 will convert to another "talk" outlet sooner or later, since he has one at 570 that
would fit here because of it's power and much improved coverage, and with the resources of the North Carolina News Network
and sister station WPTF, it would fit here, in regards to "Y102.3" & "Y102.9", i caught some of them last fall, and at times on
the internet, and they have a good mixture of oldies, but as we know their signal limits them to what they could do, i hope
Curtis Media will keep this format, although they have tweaked their schedule a little.

Isn't Y1029 going to McClatchey? Sure, the son-in-law of Don Curtis, but still technically a different company. Will that impact the staff? Format?

I learned a few things just now.

First of all, a golden opportunity was missed when, according to Wikipedia, the call letters on 102.9 changed to WKIX. Those letters should go back to 850!!!! The WWMY letters are on 102.3.

Following a link from an article that was linked t from here, I found that 102.3 was planning a new tower and a possible format change. There was also the possbility that if the tower was built Curtis would have to sell a station. I added these details to Wikipedia, but the article was over a year old. So what happened?

McClatchey is (going) out of the radio business.

McClatchey Broadcasting is still in business. He does own 102.9 WKIX-FM. Expect the WKIX-AM calls to show up sometime this week.

Did he have a change of heart since this article was published?:

Bill McClatchey, the owner of 850 The Buzz, plans to leave the broadcast business. (http://www.wral.com/business/story/5764696/)

I knew I'd read it somewhere... ;)

Don't any of you remember the old ID -- (sung) W-K-I-X (spoken) WKIX-FM (sung) Raleigh! Those were the days, my friends!

My late father worked at WKIX during it's glory days, while he was at NCSU in the mid-and-late '60s. When my family moved back to NC, KIX was playing A/C (I think...early '80s). Then they switched to Country (I believe in '83 or '84). I heard all about the PAMS jingles 'Channel 85' and how awesome it was to sit in the air chair at 'KIX.

I don't get KIX very well hear, as WEVA in Emporia, VA is on 860. I work near Rocky Mount...so, when I am there, I get 'KIX about 50% of the time in the car. So, I am able to hear it in 'bits and pieces'. What I hear is a BROAD mix of music that covers non-rock '50s music ('The Wayward Wind' - Gogi Grant...it was the #3 song of 1956 'I' believe, by today's stardards, that would be more of an Adult Standard, closer to Sinatra or Dean Martin), rock-based 50's-70's, and soft 80's songs (I have heard "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder). It's more broad than an orthodox oldies format, however I think such a station (today) needs a niche to make a real dent. The broad mix of music just may be the ticket. I am looking forward to hearing more on the return of Channel 85.

I wasn't able to listen for long but everything I heard last week fits an adult standards format. It's just a word, like country or oldies. The original meaning doesn't carry a lot of weight. But it's good music.
