Changes at Y94FM

Well, it has started. Changes are starting at Y94FM. Sources have informed that long time afternoon drive jock Capt John Smith has been released and no longer works for Clear Channel. For now, part time jocks will fill in the void until a perminent afternoon jock is announced.

Y94FM changes were expected due to the latest lackluster trends for the Adult Contemporary station. What is interesting is Capt John Smith's numbers were doing better than the morning drive and midday time periods.

So questions like...How long will Rick Gary stay doing morning drive on Y? I guess that all depends on the longevity of "Bridge Street". And how about Marne Mason? She truly lacks the talent of Kathy Rowe. Maybe, just maybe they released the wrong person.

In my opinion, find someone else to work with Rick Gary in the morning. Move Kathy Rowe back to middays. That is truly where she needs to be. Say goodbye to Marne Mason and find a new person for afternoon drive.

It is sad to see a station who at one time during the mid 80s was such a mega station in Central New York doing so poorly. Its not too late to save it. Just do the right things.

Not unusual, you need only look to the West to see a similar story in Rochester and Buffalo where WVOR and WBUF were hugely successful and market leaders back in the mid-eighties.

They, too, are mere shadows of what they used to be. WBUF, in particular, has gone through at least a half dozen format changes since 1991.

Life goes on!

im not into the morning show, so i really cant say much about it. but i do get a chance every now and then to check out Marne Mason. i think she pretty good but sounds very very board. let her go nuts on an alt/rock station and i think she will do well.

Captain John's departure had nothing to do with ratings.

Marne Mason on an Alt/rock station would go about as well as Michael Jackson teaching 3rd grade. Do you even think before you post??? c'mon

I wonder maybe if Y94 or one of the other clearchannel stations
will go "Jack-FM"? how are the ratings for Power 106.9 and
Hot 107-9? why does Syracuse have two CHR stations, like 93Q
and 107-9?

If Jack-FM ever came to CNY, how would that format do in the
market?

Happy Holidays!

If Y94 went to a "Jack" format what deference would it make? They could fire all the air staff, which is tiny anyway and save a little money. The demos and 12+ would be about the same - maybe a little younger. Y94 has become such a shadow of it self, I doubt anyone would notice the change. Everywhere Jack or it's brother or sister, cousin, whatever, has come into a market it has been pretty much a ratings failure. But once again, with no airstaff it does save money and that's what the big boys like to see.
And oh yes, do have a Merry & a Happy.

Y94 would and should be the station in the market to go Jack. However, what a refelction on the piss-poor programming staff if it did. From the incredidible numbers it had even in the last few years when Jean Ashley dominated midays. Go back to when Big Mike was there-albiet controversial in some sences... Remember the Late Night Love Nest in the 90's? Nobody's doing that anymore...For Y94 to fold...like it is....is just a reflection on the lack of programming talent that OM Rich Lauber really has and even more the lack of leadership to hire good talent that GM Joel Delominico has to hire, retain and maintain good programming people and talent. They all should take a dive off the bridge outside into O-Creek....wouldn't be a long walk.

Happy Holidays.

I was PD at Y94 in the mid-80's. It was a truly great station. Big Mike in the morning (a major pain for a PD to deal with, but great numbers); Kathy Rowe was ideal for middays - friendly, real, and had the pulse of the listener. Gomez Addams with his fictional "Club Gomez" at night, then Rich Lauber. The Dome Ranger, Traffic Tom, the Shove-It Line, Keep Track of the Music weekends, Saturday night oldies with Bob Mitchell, the Winter Rat Car Show. "Y94 FM...working hard every day to turn WHEN into a parking lot." We had 16-shares. Hard to believe what's happened...and hard to believe it was 20 years ago.
