Changes Coming To CBS News

Personally, I really do not care who reads the news as long as they
are competent and not strange looking..... I'm more interested in
content than in flash and sizzle......

Which story?

It is common for me to see a story online (text, not video most of the time) that appears several days later on a network. I chalk that up to the very compressed amount of time the networks have for their national news and the ongoing "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality of the news suits.

What drives me crazier is the "national stories" that affect only a very small portion of the viewing audience. I tend to wonder just who is running the show.

Pick a major story local or national that happened more than 10 hours ago and they will still run it with the Breaking News banner.

A perfect example of this is the current coverage of the Jeffery Epstein suicide (and dissolution of his significant estate). I would classify this as a "continuing" story and nothing approaching "breaking" news but obviously pushing a breathless "breaking" news segment is more emotional for the news teaser.

The news suits apparently think his criminal past, suicide and estate are important to the mass of Americans because they run endless stories on those three subject. Frankly, I don't think 99% of the American population give a crap and would appreciate more in depth stories about the state of our economy etc.
 
I think the main reason Epstein has stayed in the news so persistently is his ties with Pres. Trump and former Pres. Clinton, and reports that both men visited Epstein's "bunga bunga" parties, to use a term of art.

But I'm all about shoving further updates on this story to the end of the B block unless there is some evidence one of the pair of Presidents has partaken in criminal activity.

"Baltimore's Channel 13/WJZ will move the "CBS Evening News" from 7 PM to 6:30 PM, putting it in direct competition with other major network newscasts in the market. Staring September 9."

Seems to me competing against game shows and entertainment news shows has put them as a disadvantage. Might not make a huge difference in national numbers, but it levels the playing field in one major market. Wonder how many other markets do this.

Here in No-DST-Land ABC and NBC air their national news at 5:30 local. CBS at 6. After the national news everyone launches into their local news (which is generally a repeat of an earlier news program - it could be on a tape loop for all I know).

It was maybe 30 years ago when the CBS Evening News aired at 7 here in Hartford. It’s been 6:30 for a long time.
 
I couldn't understand why Norah O'Donnell got the job in the first place. She has a bit of a card board approach when delivering the news. I think an avatar could do it just as good (and for less money).

An avatar did, but now he's on 60 Minutes. ;)

It's almost like CBS News would rather return to the days of Douglas Edwards than of Walter Cronkite -- competent but dull. With the exception of Bob Schieffer, their anchors that exhibited any kind of personality were also controversial (Dan Rather, Katie Couric). Maybe that's why they prefer dull and boring (Roger Mudd, Scott Pelley, Jeff Glor).

They could get one of those AI robots to do it probably would be more cost effecient as well.

Same for WBTV in Charlotte. It must have been WFMY that had the protesters, and Dan went to commercial. I forget now whether they had the protesters again at 7 on WBTV or whether it was a new feed.

I suspect she might be getting less than her predecessor or the same. To answer your question, I think she got it because she was already a CBS employee, had demonstrated some success in the morning and CBS banked on there being attention from, again, having a female as their anchor. I think the definition of what will be considered a success is relative here. In all honesty she's doing a competent job. I'm not a fan of any of the current anchors, but I did return to CBS from NBC after not being able to take Jeff Glor's delivery.

I think Norah could have this job for a reasonably long time as long as CBS keeps its expectations reasonable and Norah understands that what she's earning now represent the apex of what she will earn in her career (with inflation adjustments). If CBS demands some unattainable ratings increase or Norah demands a big increase in pay, this could go off the rails. I don't see a change for a few years at the earliest and maybe not for as many as ten or more.

Jim Axelrod is expanding his role at CBS News. The network has named Axelrod chief investigative and senior national correspondent. He begins his new role immediately.

Previously, Axelrod was the senior national correspondent for CBS News, reporting for CBS This Morning, the CBS Evening News, CBS Sunday Morning and other CBS News broadcasts and platforms.

Since joining CBS News in 1996, Axelrod has covered a broad range of domestic and international stories. Most recently, his investigation uncovered a new Medicare fraud that’s taking advantage of popular genetic tests, and potentially costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

Phoenix is one of those "not all" markets. KPHO-TV/5 airs it at 6 PM.
