Changes Coming To CBS News

An Update on the changes from CBS to move the Evening Newscast to D.C.

Sort of a misleading article in that O'Donnell already lives in DC. The article also doesn't mention that part of the hold-up is that it's not just a new studio, but an entirely new building that they're moving into. That certainly complicates things a bit.

What are they going to be doing with the old New York studio then?

The CBS Evening News has been broadcast from the same studio as the CBS Morning News for several years. There will be nothing to repurpose, as the Morning News will remain there.

Are they still doing cbs this morning from there or is it moving like evening news.

Oh wow CBS is going to be paying a lot of rent pretty soon when this Washington location opens.

CBS has had a building in Washington for 50 years. It's 2020 M Street. That's where this Evening News studio will be. It's the same building where Face The Nation is done.

What is the point of moving the evening news there probably has to do with the upcoming election.

Well yeah, what happens in DC, election or not, is fairly consequential. So they’ll have that access for 2020 and beyond on a daily basis. It also aligns with what O’Donnell wanted.

Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one but none are useful. (Clean version!) So how about some important facts about the evening network newscasts...like this one from last week, (in the important fall rating period)...

Whoops, you have to subscribe...

but generally it is ABC #1, NBC #2, CBS #3. Norah is off to a slow start, but still early in her stint. If she can't gain, then there will be likely yet another change there within a year.

I think if you research CBS news ratings for the past few years, you'll see a similar ranking. I wouldn't blame the current ratings on Norah. It doesn't matter who the anchor is, or where they anchor from. And yes, if history is an indication of the future, there will be yet another change, although I expect they'll stick with Norah through the end of her contract.

I am not familiar with her contract. Anyone?

That's between Norah and her agent.

I would imagine her contract, like most high profile talent, have a lot of verbiage related to performance over time, not just time. That gives the network an out, should they decide to make a change. Because of those clauses, the agent will usually require some form of financial 'parachute' in advance, should the network decide things aren't working out.

The ratings are down significantly since Glor left. Down to 5.2 million viewers from about 6 million when Glor was helming it.

"ABC’s “World News Tonight” topped the evening newscasts with an average of 8.2 million viewers. NBC’s “Nightly News” was second with 7.4 million and the “CBS Evening News” had 5.2 million viewers."

In 2018 there was hand wringing over a drop in Jeff Glor's ratings which were significantly higher than what O'Donnell is bringing in: https://pagesix.com/2018/05/31/cbs-may-boot-jeff-glor-from-evening-news/

Despite this worrisome performance, CBS might have to stick with O'Donnell. I can't think of who might come off the bench and there would be negative publicity from letting the only female network newscast primary anchor go. The only thing that might have a chance at reversing this would be a misstep by an anchor at either ABC or NBC.

He was getting around 5.7 million compared to Norahs 5.2 million that’s not really a significant difference.

How so, that's a 10 percent drop in total viewers from a level low enough to warrant his being fired. Wouldn't you think any drop from a level that got someone fired is problematic? Put another way, if she had gained 500,000 viewers and NBC had lost 500,000 viewers that would be a significant narrowing of the gap.

Many factors can contribute the overall decision to go in a new direction. “Number X got him fired thus number Y should get her fired” is an oversimplification.

Here in Phoenix both ABC and NBC run their national news at 5:30 local whereas CBS is 1/2 hour behind starting at 6PM.

Do you think people who are actually interested in these glorified prescription medicine adverts are just unwilling to wait the extra half hour?

Not sure how many other major metros air the same schedule.
