Changes Coming to KOSO 93.1

New Details have surfaced in the Clear Channel Move in - Susanville's 93.3 to Pollock Pines,
an application has been filed to Downgrade KOSO 93.1 Patterson - Modesto to Class A (6000 Watts)
at 92.9 with a transmitter south of Modesto and Upgrade the 93.3 to Class B1 (25,000 Watts) at 93.1 from the KCCL 92.1 Stick above Placerville, Say Goodbye to Stockton !!!

Poor Stockton gets no respect. The Stockton market revenue is low due to so much listening to Modesto (out of market) stations like KATM, KHKK, KOSO, KRVR and KHOP. The revenue of those stations, even the Stockton based advertisers are counted in Modesto's BIA numbers.

Below is the link to Clear Channel's FCC application to downgrade KOSO (B93.1) to a Class A to serve only Modesto and Patterson.

Sounds similar to when 96.7 was downgraded when Capstar rebuilt the transmitter after someone destoyed it in 1997. I am guessing that while Stockton loses KOSO, Stockton will be able to hear the new Sacramento Station?

KOSO will still cover Stockton just fine.

Not with 6KW at 328 feet about 30 miles away on the valley floor. This is NOT the Mt. Oso return they applied for earlier. This is new. It will cover Stockton about as well as KJSN, 102.3.

Here's the new coverage map for 92.9 KOSO Class A

Here's the Sacramento move-in with an upgrade to 93.1 B1

Not a chance!!!

I did weekends at KOSO back when the transmitter was on Mt. Oso and I used to get calls from listeners all up and down the valley from Sacramento to Fresno. For a kid playing weekend DJ, that was really cool!

It is a shame what CC has done to KOSO. The once mighty coverage monster is going to become another peanut whistle. What's next? All I know is, don't ever work for a company that begins with the letter 'C'!!!!

Someone look at the engineering exhibit and tell me if CC is downgrading KSJO in San Jose too. It sure looks as if they are.

It looks like they just corrected the coordinates for their transmitter location.

FYI: Clear Channel Downgraded both KUFX and KSJO slightly to eliminate overlapping 70 db contours with the then AMFM, Inc. San Francisco stations prior to their merger in 2000. The old multiple ownership rules had different market definitions back then and relied on overlapping "city-grade" contours. KSJO dropped from 50 KW to 32 KW at their current height. KUFX dropped from 12.5 KW to 10KW.

Unfortunately, even after selling these two stations, it will be difficult to return the stations back to their original power because of old grandfathered short-spacing with KGBY and KRXQ.

Methinks RadioStarOne thought that KOSO's transmitter would stay on Oso. If that were the case, I think he would be right. But since it's gonna be moved down to the valley floor and TPO lowered, they're giving KOSO a one-two punch...KOSO will be basically castrated coverage-wise. It's a major downgrade.

This reminds me of when we moved the KYBB transmitter up into the Tracy foothills from that shack in Banta in 1990. Graft also internally modified the transmitter to pump out 6kw ERP, and those two things gave us a very respectable signal, from Merced to Pleasant Hill, and up and down the Mother Lode. Sacramento even got us a lot better, but because of first-adjacent interference from KHYL, coverage was somewhat limited to the north. Before that, B101 was pretty much an also-ran in Stockton because of the closer proximity and/or higher power of the other Stockton/Modesto FMs. Because of the rurality of the location, Tracy and Manteca were the only two cities to get anything even close to a solid signal. Looks like this is what KOSO will be reduced to.

HEYYYY.... I spent time in that 'shack' in Banta as KSRT. Man, that place was a ton of fun! Unfortunately, I came in right at the tail end of it.
