Changes In 2011

Too much invested at Radio 104 for a format change. I'd see a tweak as a possibility, but it's been gradually tweaked as they've gone. Aside from the unlikeliness of a change happening, I don't really know what's lacking in Hartford that would be a total hit and provide more revenue than the current format. If anything, I'd say a change to WMRQ-FM-HD2 and W248AB Bolton, soon to be W246CB.

More of the status quo, most likely. 97.9's move from Springfield to Hartford isn't happening any time soon. Now if we can only get rid of that damn experimental station ESPN has on 98.1 which completely wipes out reception of KIX 97.9, which in my opinion is much better than WWYZ. More variety in the music. More upbeat sound. Although on the WWYZ side I have to admit I like weekender John Seville and morning show co-host Corey Myers (even tho I don't usually listen to the WWYZ morning show) I can't stand PM Driver Bama Lance and night DJ DC.

If it hasn't happened already Blount will return WDZK 1550 to the air with preaching and teaching.

Maybe Brad Davis will finally retire. If that does happen I'm sure that will be the biggest radio story in Hartford in 2011.

Now that it seems that HD will never get into cars as OEM equipment, could it disappear in 2011 or is there too much invested in it? I notice that the redesigned WDRC-FM website has dropped the page that had been devoted to HD, or buried it in a place I can't seem to find. Buckley was an early, enthusiastic adopter of HD and promoted it heavily on-air; now it's like it doesn't exist. I don't think the Clear Channel stations ever promoted their HDs, and most of them have had trouble staying on the air anyway. So, does HD Radio survive 2011 in Hartford?

Has CT ever had an Urban AC station, simlar to WRKS or WBLS in NYC? That has always seemed to be the biggest hole in CT radio. I know there is WYBC in New Haven but their signal is quite weak and there playlist always seemed outdated to me.

Not on an FM signal.

WKND 1480 AM in Windsor (north of Hartford) which is 500 watts days and 14 watts at night is Urban AC and Gospel. When Gois broadcasting bought the station they improved it. They made use of the 14 watts of night power for the first time and retuned the antenna, ending the frequency drift, and the 500 watts goes out much farther than it used to. That being said however there are no commercials or DJs on the station. And I believe the Gopsel Music is brokered.

When Clear Channel owned 104.1 they should of switched to Urban AC as they had "The Steve Harvey Morning Show" When they were Urban they couldn't come close to Hot 93.7 going Urban AC might have done ok as no one does it on FM.

Why? Can you back this up at all? Both are good jocks.

Could Kool 101 drop the "O" word?

Dude, you're way too obcessed with that radio station...

I actually have a valid observation as to why this might be the case - but I'll save it for a new thread. ;)

I'm going to say that I've heard some rumors about 2 radio stations and a pirate, firstly, the pirate ... I won't say who, I will say they have been experimenting with HD and I've been shown that used HD equipment is actually out there and available without questions if you know who to ask, but also know this, the station I speak of is NOT on the air currently and is not in any hurry to return to the air HD or not and may never actually return to the air.
Second, a new HD signal might be signing on in the next 2 to three years (heck, there might be more than one! I know WWUH has been planning it for some time) .
Third, and I promised not to tell who, but a CT AM/FM combo might see a major change possibly including format in 2011, Note I said CT ... don't focus your guesses just on Hartford or New Haven, it could be Bridgeport, Danbury, Willimantic or someplace else. (is that vague enough?)

WDAQ did post a job opening for a PD yesterday, I don't know how much of a change that could bring.

I seriously doubt anything would happen in Willi... We're talking heritage stations that do well considering, under an ownership group that believes "slow and steady wins the race."

Love this time of year...where the radio message board guys make up rumors!

Well, looks like DC has been dropped from WWYZ. He's off the website. Wonder what VTer will end up with the position.

Was listening to 'YZ tonight. A guy named Michael J from "I Heart Radio" (what a stupid name I Heart Radio) was on.

If memory serves correctly, doesn't Michael J do afternoons in Washington? I know he also tracks a ton of shifts in various other markets.
