Changes in DFW's LPTV market

I agree - it seems like another good idea crippled by miserable marketing. 2013 and they can't even put up a Web page?

The full lineup was mostly Spanish-language channels. I don't follow the Spanish-language press; perhaps there were some ads placed there that we Anglophones never saw ???

The service is only being offered in Houston and is geo-blocked with the "coming soon!" everywhere else.

Not sure why they're running the CHANNELS everywhere else, in that case...

I saw that idea suggested on a Houston blog. IMO geo-blocking is stupid: Internet IP addresses aren't that reliable a way to tell where you are. (For instance if you're using AOL your IP is going to show you in VA no matter where you really are.) If it's only being offered in Houston, just say so on the home page, for crying out loud.

Also, stop broadcasting the damn thing on other affiliates! It's caused tons of grief for owners of a TViX 6620 and other devices that don't properly ignore the encrypted streams, and if the service isn't even being offered, there's no good reason for that grief.

Religious LP station KHFD/51 has been showing a slide on subchannel 51.3 that they'll be making some changes on Sept. 1 and "you may need to rescan." I think they're going to make the move from RF 51 to RF 26, a move I had originally expected them to hold off from making for another year at least because their new signal will cover significantly less of the metroplex.

Well, it turns out KHFD/51 didn't move to RF 26 after all. Instead, they added two new subchannels. 51.5 is religious like the first four, but 51.6 is (sigh) infomercials.

BTW I'm not loving the new board software. Just now got my password back to what it was. Took me forever to figure out how to change it. And where's the post editor with bold, italics, & all my emoticons??

Edit: Haven't found bold & italics yet, but I did find the emoticons. Unfortunately they aren't working for me yet

I just did a post in the National TV section earlier, and tried the manual coding way, modified HTML with [ ], not < >, and the b / i / u inside them, and it worked. So I guess, in lieu of the old buttons.....

Thanks! Better than nothing I guess.

Anyway, back on topic: KODF/26.1 has switched formats: it's no longer one of the many Hot TV simulcasts; instead, it's now a Godcaster called Guide Us TV. It's a bit unusual in being Islamic instead of Christian, but many African-Americans are Muslim, so that's probably the target audience. I think KATA/50.3 (Peace TV) is the only other OTA Islamic Godcaster in the DFW area.

Guide US TV is also on KHPK/28.2, formerly QVC (formerly The Cool TV). KHPK hasn't yet relabeled the channel, though (it still read QVC last night).

Too bad, in a way. The Hot-TV affiliates left are 22 (analog), 31.3 (whose signal has been poor since last March), and 50.4 (even weaker than 31.3 at my address). So they took Hot-TV off the best signal I got it on.

Someone at Mako must be reading this thread. Tonight Hot-TV is back on KODF as subchannel 26.4 :) and KHPK has labeled 28.2 GUIDETV (it had to fit in 7 characters) and 28.4 as SOUL.

Also, on this PC the editor has bold, italic, etc. No idea why they don't show up on my other PC.

something is wrong with one of the lptv transmitters. my set has HOT-TV on 27.1 and 27.2 without any call letters listed in the psip info.

Sounds like PSIP was missing from KODF's signal momentarily. It was OK when I checked it last night, but that was a few hours after your post. KDFI would've thrown a fit if the problem hadn't been corrected quickly.

KODF/26 is actually on RF 27 (KDFI/27 is actually on RF 36), so if KODF doesn't broadcast PSIP, receivers will see two channel 27s. Many receivers handle channel number collisions poorly, so weird symptoms like yours are often the result. You may need to rescan (or at least tune to channel 36) for your TV to get KDFI back.

BTW, just on the chance that someone really is reading this thread, I wish we could get a simulcast of RTV as well as Hot-TV on KODF/26, KHPK/28, or maybe KJJM/34. Since whatever happened last March, K31GL is just too weak for reliable reception anymore.

Hey JHBrandt, I just compared our graphs. I keep a low but steady signal on K31GL:

Hopefully you don't mind, but here is yours:

I'm planning on making some adjustments when the weather cools down. I ordered some new cables from monoprice and I hope to get my DB8 and a Hi-VHF on the roof. I hope to improve KXII/12 but I've had a good enough grip on it for a while:

Yeah, I don't have the knowledge or equipment or I'd submit a graph too. But I'm guessing I'm somewhere between the two of you: K31GL is mostly OK here, but neither my PC tuner card nor my Homeworx can quite get it reliably. It doesn't help that it's sandwiched between three full power signals on RF 29, 30, and 32.

There's quite a difference between your graph and Bob's. It looks like he's closer to the cliff's edge so K31GL keeps dropping off.

Very minor change at KJJM/34: the formerly "dead" subchannels 34.1 and 34.3 are dead no more. They have graduated to color bars. Curiously, though, subchannel 34.4's color bars have a slightly different pattern.

Wow: lots of changes tonight.
LATV has moved from 50.1 to (full-power) channel 47.3, replacing Mexicanal. No idea yet whether Mexicanal has a new home, but....
Channel 31.2 is back. Currently it's just another simulcast of 31.3. I seriously doubt that's meant to be permanent though.
And the color bars on 34.1 and 34.3 mentioned above have been replaced with a slide that reads "exciting programming coming soon. Check back occasionally." And of course 50.1 will be available as soon as the LATV "nighlight" slide goes away....

I didn't post much last week, but I did notice 50.1 has replaced the LATV night-light with another simulcast of Soul of the South TV (also on 26.2 and 28.4).

I'm not sure how Mako structures these simulcast deals. I bet the programming source gets a pretty good discount on second and third channels, so Mako can fill up otherwise-vacant channels with something besides color bars. But I doubt there's a long-term contract for any of these simulcasts, so I'd still consider 50.1 (or any subchannel airing a simulcast) as "available" for lease.

Just learned the following from Wikipedia:
June 2013, K31GL-D was sold to Landover 5 LLC as part of a larger deal involving 51 other low-power television stations.
Unfortunately the referenced article is behind a pay wall, so I couldn't tell which of Mako's other stations were sold as well.
