Changes in format at Kiss 104.1 coming Monday

now, always staying postive here, and i love my kiss 104.1, but it was getting stale. so freshening it up a bit is good. i'll b listening

This will be a great move for them. Don't get rid of the older oldies entirely, just cut them
back some.......like 50 %.

They've also added a new Friday night live broadcast from Pearl Bistro with Art Terell and DJ Candyman. I still think MAGIC 107.5/97.5 has a better music mix. BTW, KISS 104.1 is now "Atlanta's R&B" while MAGIC is "Atlanta's Best Mix of R&B."

...Their mix show style is just like WAMJ's, but without playing a lot more heavier hip hop hits. I'm thinking one of these stations (preferably WALR, of course) should slightly lean towards a "rhythmic oldies" r&b & old school sound (despite the fact that I once said rhythmic oldies in ATL. would be dumb). Not full blown rhythmic oldies, but "old school" and today's r&b with a slight rhythmic oldies feel. Maybe touch on some Eurythmics, Xpose, Vanity 6, Sheila E, and Madonna.. or some things of that nature.. They might as well capitalize on making certain things that have been working for V103, part of their own style.

I wonder if an "urban version of B98.5" or "urban soft rock" style would work?

i listened for a few hours sunday while i was in and out of a nap. i liked it, especially when they were going commercial free. but after midnight monday, they seemed to revert back to their same old stale playlist from before. anita baker, gerald levert, luther, etc. it didn't seem like they carried over this new mix, but i'll give them a try later on today (monday, memorial day)

Well, considering they were already somewhat spinning songs from the past 20 years in the past few months since V-103 and Majic are eroding their core. ??? I think WALR should just go back to being a Hot Urban AC prior to 2003, which competed with both stations for 25-49 demographic with some oldies mixed it throughout the day and weekend playlist. One of the main reasons why Kiss has gone stale is the lack of contemporary R&B songs from their playlist so as a result they've spun the oldies into the ground in Atlanta. I don't care for Birmingham or Cox Radio, but I would have to say WALR should take a note from its sister station WBHK in Birmingham and go head on to compete with V and Majic for the 25-49 demographic. However, V-103 will still be the victor because they seem to always find a way to tweak to all of them, but Kiss needs to get with it in a city with a larger than normal black professional population.

They are going to F up a great sounding station. ???

Kiss is already f*cked up since 2003 when they dropped all contemporary R&B to protect their now defunct sister station 97.1 Jamz. Atlanta. Kiss isn't the only stale urban formatted station owned by Cox. Have you ever looked their other urban stations in other cities? Miami's leading urban sucks, WEDR, because Cox doesn't care about the format...

Even if it were to protect a sister, I think most people would've known the difference between Kiss and Jamz. Other than that, I never understood why Kiss had dropped current music at the time. Magic had not been on the air at the time. I had wondered who would've played the new Luther Vandross or Anita Baker song if one were to come out.

BTW, I think Jamz could've worked if it were much better executed (promotion, live jocks, etc.).

I knew a person that worked in sales at Cox Radio Atlanta at the time they admitted that the dropping of contemporary R&B on Kiss was to prevent 'cannibalization' with the 2 properties. Companies do this all the time to protect the UAC from the mainstream urban and vice-versa.

The funny thing is V-103 gave heavy airplay to the newer music from Luther, Anita and the other established R&B artists when Majic and Kiss were literally sleeping on them in the early 00s. I've noticed in the past few years, V giving 30+ spins weekly of the latest music from Sade and Charlie Wilson songs in the past few years. As a matter of fact, Sade's "Soldier of Love" song was the most spun song on V-103 about 2 weeks last year. CBS realizes that they can utilize V-103 as the station that will play anything from contemporary R&B to the latest regional hip-hop hit while Kiss and Majic scrabble to keep up with them and add the latest hit from a core UAC artist so they won't miss out on the action.

WOW! I received a few emails in my inbox from radio info, clicked on one, and it went right to this topic, but at first I thought I was HERE: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=191661.0

Anyway, so far, I'm not seeing much difference, although I will admit I never really explored WALR station much.

I never really listen to WALR that much either. Sad enough its the last urban formatted station in the Atlanta Cox compound after 97.1 bit the dust and 95.5 went talk. Maybe ill give it a try. I know Tom Joyner has a great relationship with Cox maybe him staying on there is best. Wasnt Radio One trying to get him on Majic a few years ago and got stuck with Steve Harvey?

Radio One has Joyner on most of there Urban AC stations, but he was locked in contract with KISS back then when the shuffle occured. Besides, I believe Harvey is currently beating Joyner here in ATL. Every time i turn on KISS it's always an older slow song playing. IMO, MAJIC has a fresher sound of R&B that I can listen too at the age of 28. I attended 2 of MAJIC's club broadacst at Tabu2 and Echelon 3000 and they have a pack house hosted by SiMan.

If im not mistaken Steve show is now brodcasting from Atlanta the same with his show The Project on Centric? I just notice the Georgia Media.org logo during the closing credits. I listen to Majic too sometimes from LA using the Tune In app. A good mix of r&b with 80's 90's and 2000's hits.

Although I'm not really a fan of either UAC or most mainstream urban formats, WAMJ/WUMJ aka "Majic" is a well-programmed station. It has vastly improved in its presentation since 2008 when it dropped the Urban Oldies format for the current UAC format with contemporary R&B mixed with classic and gold hits. It's interesting to see that it took Kiss amongst 3 years to realized that the Urban Oldies presentation wasn't working in their favor in the long term.

Yeah, Cox has Tom Joyner on lock in its markets with UACs since they are the only outlets for his show in Birmingham, Miami, Greenville/Spartanburg, Orlando, and Yale-owned but Cox-managed WYBC-FM in New Haven, CT. The contract is written so if they Joyner switches in Atlanta to Majic then they will drop him in their other markets as well. In other words, Steve Harvey would be the winner indeed if that were to occur.

I always hear commericals on MAJIC of Steve saying "Broadcasting live from the ATL." I don't know if they are using MAJIC's studio though. I know for a fact that syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show is live here in ATL out of HOT 107.9's studios.

I listened a bit in the car today and noticed little change......wasn't sure if it was for the good
either. My guess is that they are rolling this out slowly and it will probably take about a week
for the real MIX to be heard.

>>I always hear commericals on MAJIC of Steve saying "Broadcasting live from the ATL."

He built himself a studio when he moved to Atlanta a year or so ago. The Steve Harvey Show originates there. It's a showplace.

One thing I've noticed is Kiss is now play some current UAC charting songs. They are trying, but considering it is Cox then I expect it to be either slow or half-a**ed but it is an attempt. I believe Kiss is morphing from Urban Oldies back to the Urban AC format.
