I was listening to KTCK 1310 The Ticket and read in online version of Fort Worth Star Telegram today and word has it that Steve Dennis was passed up for the Weekend Sports Anchor gig in favor for get this, another Dallas Sports Celebrity, former Dallas Maverick Derek Harper!! Word has it that Brian Custer is leaving CBS 11 also, but why/where, who knows.

Former Maverick to sign on as KTVT weekend sports anchor

By JAN HUBBARD

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Former Mavericks guard Derek Harper is taking his second career as a broadcaster to the next level. Harper planned to review the final details of a contract with KTVT/Ch. 11 on Tuesday night, then sign it and officially become the weekend sports anchor.

"The Bible says to be careful what you wish for because you might get it," said Harper, who then laughed. "This is not really something I wished for, but it's a good opportunity and I'm going to go after it."

Harper will replace Brian Custer, who is leaving the station.

Harper will work on feature stories during the week and fill in for Babe Laufenberg on the weekends. Harper said that, right now, he is still practicing and learning the art of anchoring.

"I've done a lot of television, but this is different," said Harper, who will continue to work on pregame and postgame Mavericks telecasts on KTXA/Ch. 21. "There are certain things you have to learn about being an anchor, and I want to make sure I'm comfortable before I start doing it full time. But that's going to be sooner rather than later."

Harper said he expects to begin the job as weekend anchor in early November.

Me either, But Derek Harper? He was a great player and knows the game of basketball, but his diction is not so good. Energy level seems a bit low also.

Looks like the only hope for TV journalism majors now is either starting in traffic, or weather. Pretty soon I am sure the news department will follow the sports department and start hiring fireman and cops to report the news. After all those years of being in it, surely they will know how to report it right??????

Add radio to the mix as well. Seems if one wants to get into the 'biz' one ought to get a sports scholorship, play a year or two and then jump behind the mike or in front of the camera. I can't begin to comment on the dreck that gets passed off as talent. Tony Siragusa roaming the end zone? Fuggedaboutit.

I'll take Tony "Soprano" Siragusa any day of the week over those sideline roving bimbos that we are subjected to every week.

Speaking of cringeworthy, I nominate Lynn Swan. Great receiver, terrible broadcaster.

My list of ex-jocks who took to broadcasting like a duck to water starts with Daryl "Moose" Johnston and Troy "Acme Brick" Aikman. For the short time they've been doing it, I'm amazed at their skills. I look forward to watching them for decades to come.

Aikman and The Moose are great at what they do..I have to agree about the Pam Olivers of the world, they stink. Chicks have only two places they're allowed in a football stadium:

A) Wearing a small outfit doing cheers
B) Bringing me a beer during the 3rd quarter

Great (or very good) broadcasters who also played the pro game:

Pat Summeral
Tom Brookshire
Paul Hornung
Tim McCarver
Dizzy Dean
Tony Kubek
Joe Garagiola
Steve Busby
Joe Morgan
Bill Russell
Tom Heinson

Just a few of many. It can be done, and frequently done very well.

And once upon a time, Sandy Koufax was a color commentator ...

Poorly worded ...

MOST listed below were GREAT professional athletes with the exception of McGuire and Anderson.

You mean professional athletes who were the worst sportcasters -- in your opinion.

You forgot Sandy Koufax -- one of baseball greatest pitchers and one of the worst color commentators ever -- by his own admission.

Subtrack Brookshire, Hornung, Russell and maybe Busby simply because his voice would give you an earache after two innings.

Always double check spelling of names ... Journalism, I mean Reporting 101 :).

John is not always John ... sometimes the name is ... JON.

Oh, I forgot you are broadcast, not print.

You call 'em ... as you see 'em :).

I don't get paid for this,so I am poor:)

Pee Wee Reese was another
Mickey Mantle did a few between "a few" and that lead to only a few.
Whitey Ford was terrible
Jim Bouton did better on "Ball Four" then "five"

Re: And once upon a time, Sandy Koufax was a color commentator ...

I disagree on Busby, Hornung, and Brookshire. They certainly weren't the best, but they were far from the worst. It'll be interesting to see how Derek does. I wish him well.

And I forgot Uecker. How in the world could I forget Uecker?

And I'd put up Bum Phillips as the worst color man in history. Loved him as a coach, but he'd have lost money if they'd paid him by the word.

A Bum call

> I disagree on Busby, Hornung, and Brookshire.

Obviously. You started the list :).

>They certainly weren't the best, but they were far from the worst.

Well, you titled them "great broadcasters" -- your words.

> It'll be
> interesting to see how Derek does. I wish him well.

Yep, terrific.

A great knuckleball catcher ... and a knucklehead of sorts.

> And I'd put up Bum Phillips as the worst color man in

Bum when asked by Bob Costas why he takes his wife on all the road trips, "Because she is too ugly to kiss goodbye."

Bum to an official after what he thought was a bad call, "You're going to catch more hell than just a little bit."
