Changes In The Gump (WMGY)

This is taken from an E-Mail letter, I just got from Mr. Terry Barber himself.

Around the end of August my agreement with the Alexander’s will come to an end. At that point WMGY 800 will discontinue allowing 99.3FM (owned by Alexander) to rebroadcast it’s programming. As of today WMGY has changed its format to broadcast Praise 96.5 Black Gospel - which is currently the same format that WMRKHD3 (owned by Alexander) airs and is rebroadcast on 96.5 (owned by TBE). When the agreement between the Alexander’s and myself expire later this month WMGY will be rebroadcast on 96.5.. I have not been told what Alexander will broadcast on his stations.

The souther gospel brand previously aired by WMGY has a strong following but we found much of our listenership was through our app and online so today we launched wmgyradioonline.com

Much of our listenership? I find this difficult to believe, especially given how southern gospel tends to lean more towards an older demographic of listeners who prefer traditional AM/FM radio over mobile apps, listening online. Obviously, I'm all for internet-based radio, but I've engaged with enough people on Facebook, Twitter, and elsewhere online who refuse to listen to mobile apps, smart speakers, etc, either bc they're unfamiliar with the technology or adamantly refuse to access radio with those types of devices I mentioned above. Many of them are in the 50+ age group.

Sounds more like to me that there was more $ to be made leasing the station with the black gospel format than there was doing the southern gospel format in-house, JMO...

Back in late February, wmgyonline.com rebranded and is now Gloryboundradio.com
