Changes in Tulsa Radio

Busy week in Tulsa Radio. KVOO morning host Skip is gone. K95FM is getting a new co-host from Vegas. K-Hits loses their night guy and the KXTD spanish group picks up more stations. That is a lot of change in one week.

Also, 1380 / KMUS, Sperry has been forced back onto the air by the FCC refusing to grant Disney any more time to leave it dark without turning in their license.

They're running the soundtrack to the Broadway musical "Promises Promises" over and over and over, with a dry legal ID inserted between songs every 10 minutes or so. Songs do not segue.

(I finally traced down that the lead singers are Kristin Chenoweth & Sean Hayes, who started in the 2010 "revival." I assumed it was someone like Josh Groban & Miley Cyrus... whoops.)

The song list appears to be on "random" & "repeat." I've heard a song play, then another song, then the previous song again. Even for a radio junkie like myself, it becomes impossible to listen very long without inflicting physical harm to oneself.

I also can't make any real connection between the musical or the soundtrack, & Disney.

I think they're operating 7am - 7pm, or 6am - 6pm, or something similar... I assume again to satisfy the FCC's requirements.

I'm wondering if this is happening in the other markets where Disney turned off under-performing stations about a year ago as well?

What is the value of the 1380 signal? Any word on how much the two other AM stations sold for? Closing date? None of those stations have great signals.

No idea on the value of 1380... allegedly Disney almost had a buyer this autumn but the deal fell through.

No idea on 1270 & 1570's prices... strange to me is that the FCC database doesn't show any applications that I could find to transfer the stations from Reunion to Gaytan. Certainly no approval posted that I could locate, either.

The Tulsa World has had the most comprehensive article on the changes coming:

Here's the press release issued by Gaytan Broadcasting LLC a few days earlier:

You'd think Disney would just put Radio Disney back on instead of running a computer on random play.

I hate to see KRVT and KZLI sell out and flip to Mexican, you guys gave standards and oldies a good try.

They also gave conservative talk a good try.

I tried to tell local businesses: "if you don't advertise, KRVT will go away."

They didn't advertise.

KRVT went away.

Sorry to hear this. I enjoyed listening to KRVT. How many 'spanish' stations does Tulsa need, really?

I spend a lot of time with radio and tv during the storm. The TV winners were KOTV and KJRH. Both did a great job. When it came to radio, the clear winner was KRMG. They were out in the storm as usual. When I had enough wall-to-wall coverage of the storm, I drifted to Star 103 and they were running a short update from KRMG and KOTV. The Mix station was doing the same thing. Just enough info and then music. I would call it a monopoly, but I think it was a good strategy. There is no escape from KOTV and KRMG.

I like the coverage on KOTV with Travis but really starting to like KJRH. I think the HD is helping them too. KTUL is a non-factor. Remember when they owned the market? I still miss hearing KOTV on the FM dial which went away during the digital transition.

BTW....am I the only one that still likes to listen to KRMG on the AM? I think it sounds cool during storm coverage.

Mahaffey only arrived last year, right? What's the story?
