Changes on KJOZ 880 and KGBC 1540

K231CN has reduced their power again (haven’t checked other downtown translators) allowing K231DA to breathe in Conroe once again. I’m REALLY hoping it stays this way. No need to crank up the power when there’s KCDF and KCVE

With the breaking of the KSEV simulcast on 1540, you have to wonder if a change might be imminent on 700. Could the conservative talk disappear to be replaced by another translator origination? Doesn’t look like Patrick Broadcasting has any interest in seriously restoring the station’s former coverage with a relocated directional array. The proposed 1.9kw day and 4 watts night proposal from the current STA single tower isn’t going to cut it.

I think it's obvious he is more interested in his political aspirations. Running a conservative talk station in a withering radio landscape is probably not a top priority for him.

Like most other large market independent AM broadcasters, he is probably stuck in limbo. KSEV doesn't make enough money to justify investing in it, but he also doesn't want to sell because he won't get enough for it.

Does Patrick actually think the station’s value will go up? A stand-alone AM with a now diminished signal? Hanging on to a declining asset is silly.

Patrick is also 76 years old, and will eventually run out of time for dealing with his financial assets. Leaving your heirs an AM station is like giving your kids lumps of coal in their Christmas stockings.

That's not what I meant to infer. The value in the market for an AM license is so low that he's probably better off just keeping it alive if it is still self sustaining and making some profit.

Think of it this way; AM stations are like an old car. It still runs fine and everything works. But you know the car is outdated and putting money in it isn't worth it. Unfortunately the trade-value is so bad that you're better off keeping it and getting whatever service you can still get from it. Once it breaks down, you send it straight to the junk yard and move on(in this case, you send the license back to the FCC since you won't find any buyers).

That's the jist of AM radio at the moment.

Worst case; the family just turns in the license to the FCC and sells the land.

I believe one of his sons is politically active so there is a possibility that the station could continue if it can still make money.

Who knows.

I wonder who owned the land at the old KSEV transmitter site? That wasn’t revealed when the towers came down last year. Did KSEV own that or was it a lease? Somebody made some $$$ from that sale.

The current STA site (which is also the proposed new permanent site) is an existing tower, almost certainly a lease.

KJOZ 880 is now simulcasting Puro Tejano 106.1. Looks like Latino Sports Radio is gone.

KGBC is now simulcasting Power 99.5. Had been simulcasting KSEV, which continues on its greatly diminished 700 signal.

Looks like a couple of translators now have actual originating stations.😆
@Mediafrog+ Do you or anybody else on here actually listen to confirm what you're saying? 1540 KGBC is still simulcasting KSEV.

Yes, the KSEV simulcast on KGBC has returned this morning. But 1540 had been running the Power format the past few days.

However KJOZ is still running Puro Tejano at a check just now.

You would have known KGBC had been running Power the past few days if you had actually listened to confirm. Please don’t accuse me of making things up.😡

Looks like the 39.449 acres was owned by Patrick Broadcasting until 12/20/21 when it was transferred to "WOODLANDS LAND DEV CO LP" which has the same mailing address as Howard Hughes Holdings.

Prior to Patrick, the land was owned by "LIBERMAN BROADCASTING OF HOUSTON".

Howard Hughes Holdings -weren't they a part of the land deal that the Houston Texas just made near Highway 290 and The Grand Parkway?

Yes, they are. The Texans team President made several mentions of them in regard to the new team facilities during an interview on SportsRadio 610 on Friday, 2/13.

Liberman owned KSEV in the 00’s while Patrick purchased the time. Sort of like selling your own office building but staying put with a lease. Patrick has owned the station for two separate stints, after buying it from the original KTBT ownership.

Liberman also owned 1230 for a number of years before selling it to the current church group. Although KCOH filed a Resumption of Operations last fall from a new facility in Pasadena (KFTG tower) I have yet to hear them actually on the air. No programming clients stepping up? You would think someone would want it as a translator originator, but this is Houston, after all.😖
