Changes to South Bend (1580/1620)

Well, if I listened correctly, it looks like Radio Hollywood has been removed for a dual broadcast of 1580 ESPN Radio. I got a very strong signal around 7 AM this morning with what sounded like a AMP voice track mentioning 1620 AM ESPN radio and then I heard part of the National Anthem. Then a very strong ESPN Radio. I will continue to monitor.

It would be a major setback to the Senior Citizens of South Bend who loved the songs of Radio Hollywood. :(

9 AM update: Yes its official. "ESPN RADIO is now on 1620 AM WHLY." (AMP Voiceover)

I know it's just reality that the standards audience is dying, but I am saddened every time I see another standards station bite the dust. I remember when WHLY went on, and talking with then-PD Mike Shannon about it. He did such a nice job with the station, and worked hard to promote it.

I did standards at WBOW in Terre Haute for a while in the early 90s and have a soft spot in my heart for the format.

So, does the standards format move to 1490 then? I don't see AMP gaining very much by simulcasting U93 on there. Heck, AMP might do better to simulcast WZOW on there, since the older demos still acknowledge that the AM band still exists.

I liked listening to 1580 but once you get to the east side of Elkhart and points further east the signal sinks like a rock. Hopefully 1620 will be a stronger signal.
