So, no sarcasim...what do you think (as the radio pros you all are) KYKX would have to do to beat KNUE..I know that many of you will say first...

Get rid of current managment..

it doesnt look like Access 1 will act on this so drop that option...
they have a great voice guy (sean caldwell)
Danny holds down the morning show on his own
Paula has a loyal following........

...as in the ones who do not really know a thing of managing a station that has always been a stellar powerhouse all these years until the fall of bad programming and mamgement. Some of us already know what's been under the microscope lately.

At the rate it's going I think that Access 1 may have a limited variety of options. However, if they keep the format the way it is and hire someone who can properly manage and program this station, then they'll have a knack at being the most competitive. They can bring some glory back into what was once the #1 country station in East Texas. Don't get me wrong. KNUE is a great station, too. Both of these stations have the edge as far as audience and revenue are concerened. Therefore, if KYKX decide on "burying the dead horse" (country) and replace it with a "philly" (possibly any other format for that matter), then the ball is in their court.

> they have a great voice guy (sean caldwell)

Agreed. Good imaging always keeps the station sounding fresh.

> Danny holds down the morning show on his own

Again, I agree. Danny is and can be a whole hell of a lot better doing mornings than teaming up with Dru. Danny has that potential to do it solo or better yet have someone team up with him. What we don't need is another dysfunctional morning team. Danny is more deserving on the wake-ups. Believe me.

> Paula has a loyal following........

Indeed she does. I've been listening to her on every radio station she'd been on in my 20 years of this field. Paula has loyalty and a very beautiful voice (though I cannot comapre her to Amy Austin at KOOI. Both voices are equally beautiful in their own way). I do believe that she has done so much for KYKX in the number of years she's been on and she really has paid her dues. I remember her when she was at KTYL back in the 80s. She deserve to have that credit where it's due.

It's not about the "circle of friends" that programming or management has to gain power. It takes a team of pros who can win together. Work head to head with department heads on promotional ideas and all of the other likes to bring KYKX back to prominance. It's really a no-brainer. Take out the egos and work together and build back the audience and revenue that KYKX lost in recent months, if not years. Some of you might beg to differ, but that's my two cents worth on this thing.<P ID="signature">______________

Sorry Juan,Ginger and Dru are a virus that keeps on mutating on that station. Fire them. The station then could rebuild and actually be ran as a station not a personal walkman.

What you point up is basically true and would work in an ideal environment. But few corporate operations, especially broadcasting, can put the egos aside and everyone pull together for the good of the order. Access 1 obviously is run by people with decent financial backing and, moreober, huge egos which they won't put on the back burner in order to benefit the organization. The on-air product seems to matter much less than the intrinsic gratification the suits in the front office derive from "running" the company and playing the corporate power game. It's all paid for mostly by other people's money, so as long as the stations in the various clusters are on the air and doing "something," investors are for the most part happy and Access 1 people can continue building their high-dollar play ground. Chances are they aren't as concerned with getting everyone on the same page and revitalizing KYKX's competitive edge as they are having a multi-million dollar comglomerate of stations to serve as a platform for long lunches and endless carpeted office conversations about what the company COULD do(but in all likelihood never will). As in many businesses, mediocrity is the norm and acceptable, just as long as the right pockets hold enough dollars. A higher quality product would net even more revenue, but, hey folks, doing that requires time, effort.....and money.

Absolutely a very good observatory and valid point, nuzguy.

I think they would just need good people. They've tried to slam KNUE on the "live & local front"...they tried to "outmorning" with Cornbread for a year before he went to greener pastures. NOthing worked. BIte the bullett, ante up, and hire good people. Not hangers on or wannabe's. KNUE is live in afternoons...that's all. BUt they kick KYKX to the curb. Either TOTALLY COMMITT to winning East Texas Country....or flip the format and get what you can
