Harold:

With all due respect, first it was David that you
beat up for his grammar, then it was me (Tibbs) for
questioning your intentions or where you were
coming from (again, with all due respect, I wondered
what your basis for the comments were) and now
it appears that you are cutting down beer (or
beer drinkers.) What, sir, or who is next?
Bill Gates? Al Gore? Best Buy for selling
evil computers? Or, God for the air we all
breathe?

What does any of this have to do with the validity
of David's comments about advertising?

Gee, Harold.

You misused "sic" which is intended, principally, to point out errors of usage, not errors of typing.

Usually, "sic" is used to point oout that "further" was used when "farther" was intended or when "insure" was used where "ensure" was needed. It is a way of indicating that the reader should be aware that an improper usage is in the original cite, but that the commentatior has read the passage with the intended rather than the expressed term.

Using "sic" to highlight a transpostion of letters caused by dyslexia is tacky. And the wrong way to use the device you thought you alone amongst us knew how to use.

Gee, about a month into my freshman year debate club activities I learned that obfuscation is a cheap and ineffective device that seldom yielded a win. Oh, that was my freshman year in high school. And you purport to be a college professor.

Your inability to recognize the value of spontaneity in radio and advertising (this thread) and to see the integration of contiguous communities (the mercifully dead past thread) shows how inflexible you are, and, simultaneously shows why America's educational system is in such dire crisis.

Another gem from the master of all he knows. And of much
he doesn't. You really do have to work harder. This effort
really doesn't cut it. Your put-downs have been better in
the past. Untrue, but better.

And what's the deal about "you purport to be a college
professor?" I am? Maybe you think I'm Irwin Corey?

Again, David does battle with the killer rabbit..and
loses.

You want David's opinion, see the above. If you want the
expert explanation, read the American Heritage
Dictionary. Here it is as anyone can see on
dictionary.com:

"sic
adv.

Thus; so. Used to indicate that a quoted passage, especially one containing an error or unconventional spelling, has been retained in its original form or written intentionally.

[Latin sc. See so- in Indo-European Roots.]

If the subject of "sic" fascinates you, there is an interesting
discussion of the meaning of this word/acronym. Check out this
string from England's Guardian newspaper. Notice that the
consensus is in agreement with American Heritage and me. Sorry
David. It's so.

Mentioning dyslexia is David's way of characterizing me
as some heartless person. If I was, I wouldn't be trying
to help David with these educational posts.

And since this is a radio forum, anybody think country is
coming back to WHN?

Perfect. Since cites in newsgroup posts are contained in brackets, the reader KNOWS that the cite is the original poster's, and there is no confusion.

The reason to use "sic" is to avoid confusion as to who commited the error or to point out an improper usage in its context. Neither exists in a bracketed newsgroup or board post. Therefore, the device is unwarranted and, actually is a distortion of the original post!

Your quote wasn't in brackets. I used quotation marks in
conveying your words of wisdom to the reading public. Hence
the entirely appropriate use of the mark-up abbreviation.

David...You can put down the sword. The rabbit won.

Well, that is a new one. I was more used to hearing, "the rabbit died."

Since you have a new cause, the removal of 1680 from Princeton to the Philly MSA, and its metamorphosis from Indian / Asian to Spanish / Puerto Rican, I guess we can find you on the joisey board.

Shouldn't that be "joisey boid"?

Riiiight. We will _both_ be accused of being politically incorrect, now. Isn't New Jersey where Tony Soprano lives?
