Changing viewing habits and cable schedules?

I have increasingly noticed cable networks using more "block" schedules where they show 4-5 episodes of a show at a time, whereas before there might have been "back-to-back" 2 episodes of a show. For example, TBS shows 2-hour blocks everyday of Friends, Seinfeld, and American Dad and 3-4 hours of Big Bang. Also, Comedy Central now shows 5 Futurama episodes every weeknight. Obviously, it is a smart idea because it gives viewers a chance to find the show they want to watch, but it seems remarkably different from even a decade ago where that was not the norm (note: not saying this is a bad thing). Anyone else noticed this and how much is viewing habits affecting this (i.e. online viewing, Netflix, ect.)?
