Channel 106.7 adding new music

I noticed today that Channel 106.7 has added some new music to their playlist. They were playing "Dynamite", "September"-Daughtry, and two Katy Perry songs. The focus is obviously still on the 90s, but this is a bit different than what they've been doing for the past 6 months.

You're right. They are now playing a very small handful of currents at the rate of one per hour. Interesting choices too -- "Raise Your Glass"? That is a brand new song that isn't even a proven CHR hit yet (but most certainly will be soon)...

How long has this been going on? I haven't listened or checked the playlist lately.

I haven't noticed the new music because I don't listen all that often. I do think they're throwing in some slightly more interesting music lately though from when I do listen. I heard 311 and some DMB yesterday. I don't understand the mix though, they went from Winger right to 311. I moved here from the Pittsburgh area last year, and this music selection reminds me a lot of the "Bob FM" type format out there. There was no rhyme or reason to their playlist either.

I think it was in the plan from the get-go to eventually evolve to Hot AC. Hot AC is one of those formats that rarely starts out as a Hot AC. Many times they evolve from heritage CHRs (WINK) or from mainstream ACs (The Rose). I think they are evolving even more quickly because the initial 90s format didn't get the traction they'd hoped for.

It seems WINK has gone more mainstream than in the past opening the door for this type of evolution.....but they must be careful not to repeat the COOL POP failure.

I think this is exactly right. With WINK moving ever so closer to mainstream AC (let's face it, they basically are at this point) that has left room for a station hipper than WINK, but not quite as young as Kiss. They have certainly noticed the softening of WINK over at Kiss, as they have gone more mainstream CHR the past few months. So, it's a small but quite clear niche that Channel would fill in the Harrisburg market. Clearly their summer numbers must have been abysmal, as they are already (after only 6 months) starting to evolve. It's looking like they "want" to be an Adult CHR/Hot AC. They are actually starting to sound a lot like My 106.1 in Philly, a Rhythmic AC that still plays some of the large Hot AC hits (Daughry, The Script). This format might actually do quite well in Central PA.

I have to agree that Channel does sound similar to My106.1 in Philly. Actually, Channel seems more focused with their format. I wouldn't be surprised to hear more current songs added to their playlist over the coming weeks/months.

No more new music.

They could have phased it in much better. Like, start playing songs from 2005-2009 before they immediately add brand new CHR material.

Any numbers to share with these recent changes?...I know "Shitadel" does not subscribe so we don't see the full landscape of ratings results.

Management must be happy with the early returns or they wouldn't have invested in boards. In this economy, you can't afford to throw money into losing propositions.

True.

Also, the gold content on WHKF and WWKL has remained the same since the book came out. You'd think if they didn't feel threatened they would have got rid of all the gold -- but they are still intent on playing it. If anything WWKL is going overboard. We are talking at least one 90's track per hour, in addition to the old-school lunch. That is a bit much for CHR. And I can't help but think that is might start touching Wink's demos.
