Channel 10's News at 7PM

After viewing this "debacle" all I can say is thank god I have cable TV so I can watch YNN news.

I also have to wonder why in hell is 10 allowing the "actress" to anchor this newscast? One would have thought that perhaps a stint in Buffalo TV would have improved her anchoring skills. It hasn't. ::)

I'm always somewhat amazed that people with talent are passed over while others who lack the basic abilities of a journalist/news anchor are the ones always getting the breaks. It's no wonder viewership for television news has been on the decline for years.

Maybe its because I sprained my ankle which puts me in a sour mood today but I've had enough of your constant bit**ing on here.

If you don't like Channel 10's 7pm newscast, then don't watch it!

As for the person anchoring that newscast, did it ever occur to you that perhaps your snide remarks hurts her feelings? And again, I repeat, if you don't like this person, then don't watch!

Granted you and everyone else has the right to provide your opinions here. But over the years all you've done is just bellyache about everything from the salary the station manager at WXXI makes and now this.

As we approach a new year why not make a resolution to consider other people's feelings before painting a bullseye on them.

I'm not all that crazy about Lia Lando, but I find her more professional and grown up on air than Nikki Rudd.

You could at least refer to her by name. Really, should we treat her with so much disdain because of a previous job? She's not some kind of "pure blood" journalist or something? Some seem to really throw around that word with such disgust. I can't help but think those people are using it as a substitute word rather than call her what they really want to.

Can't say anything about Lia Lando's current work for Channel 10 at 7 PM (haven't seen it yet), although her previous work at WROC seemed to show her as perfectly competent to anchor a newscast in this market.

Why is she there now instead of Rich Funke? A couple reasons...the first of which is that Rich was carrying so much airtime he was on the edge of being overworked relative to other anchors in the market, and the last thing you want to do to any of your frontline anchors is burn him out.
This also gives 10 the opportunity to work in some new faces, build a bench that can more closely match Channel 13's deep roster.

Sorry about your ankle, but that isn't going to stop me from posting my thoughts or opinions on here.

As for purposely hurting someone's feelings; that was not my intention. However if the truth hurts, so be it!

Ms. Lando (see I can use her name) isn't the worst television news anchor in Rochester, but she also isn't the best. I'm not the only person who feels that way, as apparently some posters think that Nikki Rudd is out of her league when it comes to anchoring the news.

I just jotted down my opinion about Channel 10's 7pm newscast after viewing it one evening and offered my personal observation. If you disagree with me, that's your right.

Maybe with there will be some needed on-air changes at 10 when the new station manager takes over.

I've seen it now--and get what they're trying to do on Channel 10 at 7.

WHEC can't get the prime access shows for the 7 PM slot that 8 and 13 do well with, they'll be frozen out of those shows for a while, and the sitcom reruns weren't getting it done. So they have to counterprogram. At the same time, they want to extend their news brand into demos they haven't reached up to now (and neither has anyone else). Putting a newscast on with a younger anchor, a brisker pace, and lighter content can get it all done at once.

The jury's still out on how well it'll do in the Nielsens, but it's a credible effort in terms of what it's trying to do. Lia Lando is competent--I'll admit my taste in anchors runs more to people like Don Alhart and Ginny Ryan, but I can see how Lando will connect with young (especially young female) viewers and draw some demos who don't normally watch local news. It makes business sense and just might work. It's certainly worth a try.

It won't work because younger viewers don't watch TV news. If they want news they will get it on the internet.

All Channel 10 did was jump on this bandwagon that a 7:00 pm newscast is a great idea.

This isn't New York City where it takes hours to commute home through rush-hour traffic. Most people who work a 9-5 job are home either by 5:30 or 6 at the latest. Besides with the ability to record on DVR, anyone who truly wants to see a 6pm newscast can pre-record it.

You know, it's possible that some 9-5 people want to come home, have dinner with the family, and then watch the news. A 7PM newscast might fit their lifestyle nicely. DVRing something takes time and effort. Turning on the TV, and picking a channel is easier.

Lia Lando anchored here in Buffalo for a while on Channel 4. She was an OK anchor. Since she's not anchoring a major newscast, she might be the right fit for the station. I don't know their other anchors, but I'd think that she'd be the equal of most weekend or early morning anchors.

As far as her credentials are concerned, doesn't she have a degree from Newhouse at Syracuse? And didn't she also intern in NY at Dateline NBC? That should be cred enough, even if she did make Ben Franklin a president.

As far as her other talents are concerned, so what? There are a lot of broadcasters who have taken forays into acting - few as successfully as Lando. I guess she also sings. As long as she doesn't do karaoke on a newscast, I don't see the problem.

She seems to draw a lot of sniping from some folks. It almost seems like there might be a little jealousy, and overly harsh criticism simply because she's a fine looking woman.
