Dean will return to afternoon newscast

By ROBERT PHILPOT

STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

Less than two months after it went away, KTVT/Channel 11's 4 p.m. newscast is coming back in a half-hour format that will see the return of Jody Dean to the co-anchor chair.

CBS-11 announced Thursday that the newscast will return Monday, replacing the syndicated game show Jeopardy!, which will replace the station's 7-week-old 11 a.m. newscast. The syndicated newsmagazine Inside Edition will remain at 4:30, where it moved Sept. 12 as part of a lineup shuffle that involved all the aforementioned shows as well as a new 9 a.m. newscast

Considering Jeopardy ran against Oprah on 8 and they are both syndicated by Kingworld. I am not surprised. She is unbeatable and the newscast is a cheap competitor.

Re: Channel 11 in "Jeopardy"

"Jeopardy" is down 23% from a year ago. I'd guess that lots of folks like me are still feeling Ken-Jenninged-to-death from last year. Besides, Ch 11 had decent numbers pairing "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" with "The Price is Right" in mornings. But I don't think the same crowd would watch both "TPIR" and "Jeopardy" (unless Art Fleming was brough back from the dead to host.) "Price" is littered with ads from every electric wheelchair manufacturer in the world, and Wilford Brimley in between with whatever he's hawking these days. "Jeopardy" still belongs to the college crowd, and would probably be a decent lead-in to "Young and the Restless."

All these newscasts at weird hours is just overkill to me. Remember when "Bewitched" reruns on 11 used to beat EVERY local newscast at 6PM in the 70s? Samantha may have been onto something there.

Ch 8 still shows the best long-term consistency. Morning news, noon news, then 5, 6 and 10. Works for me. No guesswork involved.

Isn't this a TV topic better suited for the TV board???

For the record, a couple of reasons.

One, Jeopardy failed to rate. Not sure why, since I thought it would do quite well. Perhaps the audience didn't follow it. Just a guess, but I suspect the Jeopardy viewer doesn't much like change.

Two, the show's failure to rate created a major hole at 4. Dr. Phil does very well, but without the 4...ratings for the 5 tumbled. Same for the 6. We spent the rest of the evening trying to recover. And while the 4 cannot draw premium ad rates, the 5 does - unless it's in the tank. When you're still in a growth cycle, you can't afford holes.

I look at this way. Phil is the oven, the 5 is the table. That makes the 4 a breadwarmer. Not the most important item in the kitchen, but good to have.

The downside is that I have to shave, and wear a tie and make-up again.

I'd guess that something male-oriented should go on at 4PM. All the women are watching Oprah, and that won't change anytime soon. Maybe a newsmagazine ala "Inside Area 5" of the olden days, or something very business or sports-intensive? No reason to kiss that timeslot goodbye if there's something out there that can attract non-Oprah worshippers. A daily stock market wrap-up might pull in some interest, or a late-week NFL/college/high school preview.

And honestly, I think there's still a problem with legitimacy there at Ch 11. Despite all the ex-Channel 8 hires, a growing news effort, etc, I think viewers' perception is still of the Channel 11 of old. I know I still accidentally flip to 4 fairly often for CBS programs, forgetting all about the 10-years-past change. The "growth cycle" you speak of should have reached maturity long ago, after 15 years of a regular news program there. Not to knock you or anyone's efforts over there, but old habits are hard to change. No matter how flashy the sets or energetic the product is, some folks still tune to the tried-and-true at Ch 5 or 8 because they've watched them all their lives and just aren't willing to change. I have nothing against 11, but I can count the times on one hand that I've watched a Ch 11 newscast in the last few years. Despite 8's constant tinkering, I still trust them and watch them regularly.

And is KTVT going to ignore their 50th anniversary? Or did I miss the show?

Alice is right, 11 isnt a bad station, but many people still think of it as the place where you tuned in for lawrence welk reruns and wrestling on saturday nights. I can also say that ive tuned in maybe 4-5 times in the past few weeks for the news, and thats it.

Also, why isnt KTVT celebrating its 50th anniversary in style? Like a big TV special that shows the history and highlights of where its been and where its going. I know alot of people would want to see clips of shows like Chiller,Slambang Theater,Saturday Night Wrestling and the Super Ones Kids Club. Also, dont forget the classic local ads (esp. the Siegel's "Wine Of The Week" ads) as that was intrigual part of the local television experience.

Re: 50th...

There were plans to celebrate the 50th, but two things worked against it. First, hurricane coverage sapped time and resources. Second, our exact anniversary is September 11.

Re: 50th...

Slambang has a great idea. Put it on around the holidays when there is endless reruns. It would get great ratings . It worked for ch.8 and Ch5 when they did their shows.

Jody. I don't see how you can do the news program at 4,,Kluv in the mornings and still have a private* life without short changing the wife and kids. It bears reconsideration. So little time and too much pressure.

*Corrected for the Batman as a public service.

Re: Channel 11 in "Jeopardy"

I didn't grow up here so I don't have the "zeroed in" and pre-programmed for news on certain stations. But is the news programming saturated??? 9am....11a....noon....4pm...5 pm...6pm...7pm...9pm...10pm. YOu can find local news SOMEWHERE on the dial all the time. Another thing I've noticed about DFW stations is that they replay the nightly newscasts waaay earlier than other markets. 12:30 or 1am instead of 2 or 2:30. Maybe I'm still used to east coast time. I like Channel 11's news. And to be honest with you, Karen Borta caught my eye while surfing. Then I read about Tracy Rowlett being voted the best anchor in the Observer. I flip between Babe and Hanson on sports...but most of my news comes from KTVT...Least at 10pm. I'm as likely to hop on the net and check what story I wanna read as I am to sit thru the 4...5...or whatever newscast.
