Channel 12 off Dish Network tomorrow?

Looks like Dish is having one of their famous hissy-fits with Gannett now. If they don't work out a deal, then Channel 12 and all the other Gannett stations nationwide will go away. These things eventually get worked out, but this happens way too often with Dish Network.

Rabbit ears are your friend. ;D

Here in rural Arizona, small antennas work just fine to bring in all
the programs available, generally, via translator. I hope Dish
Network doesn't cave to Gannett. All their stations are lackluster.
I, for one, could live without any particular network or station, if
they charge too much and Gannett appears to have an insatiable
appetite for charging what others offer for free or simply overcharging!

Rabbit ears NOT ! :-\

Rabbit ears are the only thing that works for me. Can't use big VHF/UHF outdoor - bad signals.

I don't watch much Channel 12, but, let me say, I can't wait until their contract with Scripps is up! ;)

OK, so what is your idea for making newspapers or news websites profitable? Remember they have REAL people like you and me taking care of the websites. I'm sure that they appreciate having a paycheck every couple of weeks. ;)

I suspect the eventual model will be just a very few national news pubs and the locals will shrink down to handle just local news of a non-immediate nature. Newspapers and news magazines still do a much better job of in-depth reporting than the visual or audio news machines so they will continue to have a place. Whether they are ad-supported or subscription is probably related directly to how critical their news is deemed to be by the general public.

And, with dead-tree media being replaced by smartphones and tablet computers, the high costs of paper, printing, and delivery will go away. Those are very high-cost items, both in terms of equipment, but in salaries to run and maintain this equipment.

I agree in general but consider that IT costs are also not immaterial. I suspect that printing and delivering a newspaper might be more expensive than electronically delivery but that is not a given. And there are ways to reduce delivery costs (USPS 2nd class for example). If immediacy is not an issue, such as with local run of the mill news, delivery by postal carrier could cost less than hiring dedicated delivery people. The highest costs will remain the news gathering employees - especially if the news is all local.

I had a subscription to the AZ Republic for Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun which came to just over $17 a month. I was happy with that.

But when they forced me to pay over $4 a month for "digital access", which I did not want, that is where we parted company. The digital access should have been an optional fee if and only if I wanted the access to AZCentral.com and the other sites that ride on it, not a MANDATORY charge.

So I no longer am a customer of the AZ Republic and I don't really miss the papers. (Hey, I don't have to collect them once a week and take them out to the recycle bin.)

I agree, although I got Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun for only $5 a month. I was able to renew right before they did their switch and got Wed/Sun for $1.50 per week. I will probably not continue the paper after my current subscription is up.
