Today Channel 2 Action News began broadcasting in HD. Wow! What a picture and studio set! I think it's better looking and picture quality than 11Alive News. If you have HDTV check out Channel 2.

WSBs HDTV stuff looks really phenomenal. The new graphics, the set and everything are awesome.

It makes all 11Alive's stuff really sub-par.....

Not only that, but the weather graphics (including the radar), tower cams, and chopper are all HD. WXIA's graphics and chopper are still SD. (I don't have an HDTV, but that is what I heard). I suspect WXIA will be scrambling to catch up.

I think WSB-TV panicked after WXIA launched HD news. But WSB is giving WXIA a run.

One thing though: Like WXIA initally, WSB is still using their old music. I hope that changes in short order.

After looking at this photo...

Is the large image behind the set a live video feed from the Towercam? I noticed during the 5PM newscast that the sun was setting behind Monica.

If so that's a neat idea. The only potential problem will be mammoth raindrops behind the anchors and the attack of the killer wasps that usually happens when fronts roll through.

The giant rear-projection background seems to be a popular feature with new studios in the last couple of years. Stations as diverse as KABC, WCPO, WFIE (Evansville, IN) all have these as backgrounds...which I guess is better than a fading color-washed duratran (which is what WSB had prior to this). Most of the stations use their tower-cam to film the background, though I've noticed that couple times I've been in the Evansville area (where I grew up) that WFIE has seemingly quit using their tower-cam view of downtown Evansville and is projecting what looks like a oil-paint quality picture of downtown Evansville instead.

The only complaint I have about their set is the "2" logo in the center of the desk. I think a plasma screen would have looked better.

What always amazes me is what you don't see behind the scenes... at WSB's set in the old White Columns building, the duratran was held up by bent-into-an-S-shape paper clips, supported by rubber bands.

It'll be neat to see how the big rear projection looks during severe weather coverage. I can just see them "looking out the window" during longform coverage. And God forbid we ever have a major attack on a downtown Atlanta target, there'll be some interesting possibilities for coverage there, too.

Anyone notice that the audio (especially when the news anchors talk) is a milisecond ahead of the video? Kind of annoying.

I find all this HD TV hoopla a waste of time and money. I realize I am a minority with my twenty year old rabbit eared Sony TV in the bedroom with its fuzzy reception. I could care less about how pretty things look; I just want a quality news report without the Monica slant and Cox BS. This parameter immediately precludes the inclusion of channel 2 on the bedroom News Remote . . .

Boy they had a brutal 11 oclock show tonight. Bad audio, jittery video, wrong photos, Monica apologizing...and lets soften up the light on Big John P! His left eye was so battered, I thought he'd been a contestant on The Contender!

What's up, engineering? HD's been around long enough not to have the audio delay, out of frame graphics, and stretched video! And what is going on with ABC Network audio? Why was Boston Legal's audio as warbly as if it were recorded on a Sony TC 100-A? (That's just for you old radio newspeople)

And while we're at it, the ONLY talent that looks better in HD is Carol Sbarge. You look better than ever!

Totally agree about Carol Sbarge. Very hot for a 40ish mom.

It's like one day she went from anonymous field reporter to very hot anchor. Something happened there.
