Channel 2 news set

Monica was off Friday night and John anchored solo from the newsroom. At the top of the newscast, he mentioned he was anchoring from the newsroom. For the toss to Glenn Burns, they went straight to him on the key wall and didn't show the Severe Weather Center. They debuted their current HD set on September 27, 2006. Is this an isolated event or is another set modification coming? Guess we'll have to watch this weekend to see if more newscasts originate from their newsroom.

WSB-TV's HD set debuted on the day they went HD. Of course...after being beaten in the HD race by WXIA, they kept quiet.

They had one weekend in the newsroom, followed by a temporary set for a few weeks. WXIA did the same thing when they moved studios, one night in the newsroom, and then on to a temporary set.

WSB-TV has a new intro for the HLN updates (sans "DT in the callsign), albeit with the same 1998-era music (11 years and going), while the main WSB-TV newscasts still have the old "WSB-TV-DT" graphics.

Again...they also may have had technical problems. A major computer failure hit WAGA prior to the 5 PM newscast one time late last year, but yet they managed to get on the air, albeit with limited capability for the first few minutes.

Just remembered...WSB-TV is blowing out the last half of the newscast for high school football coverage. Since Monica was off...and Chuck was in the field...they may also had a lack of staff, and decided not to power up the news set. In other words...it was just easier to do 15 minutes of news from the newsroom.

This just feels like a set modification/set change. This morning, Linda Stouffer was also anchoring from the newsroom and the toss to Brad Nitz was to the key wall and not the SWC.

Channel 2 has been consistent over the years in changing their sets/graphic look in the fall. The move to the current logo was September/October 1985 as a phased in look. The hard switch to the gold 2 on a blue field from the big round red 2 took place in October of that year. ABC's network theme was "You'll Love It" and WSB slowly unveiled the new 2 in primarily tagged network promos for that year. WAGA went to their current set on March 26, 2007 after more than eight years on the old brick wall look. It debuted January 31, 1999, the night the Falcons appeared in Super Bowl XXXIII.

WXIA did go HD first and a friend of mine on their engineering team told me how they wired the 1611 building for HD. Great insight on how you had to have pretty much a parallel plant for analog and digital signals in 2005.

According to Brad Nitz (via Twitter) the studio is being re-lit with new lighting technology that looks better & is much more efficient.
