Channel 2 WGBH BEGATHON TIME: I SEE DEAD PEOPLE....

Went to Ch. 2 at 7 tonight to hear Emily rooney. Had to call the station to find out that they have taken their best show off the air for two weeks during their "begathon."

They ran a repeat of The News Hour and I turned to Chris Matthew on CNBC.

Also, this begathon features mostly dead people. Everytime I tune in there is the late Julia Child...bon apetitie and the VERY late Joseph Campbell who has been dead for nearly thirty years. If not them then Judy Garland who has been dead since July of 1969 singing with the recently dead Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and Dan Martin. Then they broadcast the Lost ...read that dead musical comedy stars who appeared on old Tony Award shows.

Channel 2 WGBH : All Dead - All The Time.

Guess WGBH must call this the "grave yard shift".

It is a shame CH. 2 drops their best programs and then asks for money. Seems more than a little stupid for the educational station to do something like that.

The logic of these PBS begathons in general are mind-boggling. If they want to bring in more money, why not run the best shows during pledge period, instead of endless reruns of the same, made-for-pledging mush?

The idea is this - put on something that they don't usually run to get people like me who never watch public TV to tune in when they're flipping channels. Then tell them they can get the uncut/extra footage version of that show for a donation.

But what is the future of all those shows since everyone on them is DEAD.

Not everyone is dead - they're running a documentary on ABBA this begging season.

Not a good omen. They may all be dead soon. ;-)

Just Recently Tonight, WGBH begins to show more dead people, Aione in the Wilderness with Richard Proenneke who died 2 years ago.

To which Parklane replied:

The four members of ABBA may be around for years to come, but there are those who say the group's musical career has long been dead.

And while we're at it, although I don't know if WGBH or WGBX will run it, other PBS stations have run a pledge special featuring excerpts of old Lawrence Welk shows where the musical cast was doing patriotic songs. The special is titled "Lawrence Welk's God Bless America". I believe Welk has been dead for about ten years. His orchestra's number-two man, Myron Floren (who I believe took over leading the Welk orchestra after Welk's retirement in the early/mid 1980's), passed away just recently.

Again, WGBH Channel 2: ALL DEAD ALL THE TIME.

That would be news to Bruce Springsteen. WGBX 44 ran a concert performance of his last night.

Yes, but his voice died about ten years ago.

It's so damn awful what these PBS stations do. Then, everything ends up "brought to you by" McDonald's or ADM anyhow. The whole thing is archaic.

One of the few things I enjoy on PBS are the British comedies. Really great stuff - IMO. And, I really enjoy them on Sunday night on NH Public TV. Awesome way to unwind and prepare for another work week.

But, they're always screwing with the schedule. It seems like every other month is begathon time!! You just get used to watching those shows on Sunday night and BANG, they're gone for 3 or 4 weeks. So damn undependable. Why in the world do they think that showing the Grateful Dead over and over will result in us giving them money?? Just show the things that we like and MAYBE we'd think about forking a buck or 2 over. But NO, we have to totally upend the broadcast schedule for weeks at a time. I hate it and I refuse to watch that mess!!

Rant over, thanks for listening.

Wouldn't the Ultimate Dead People Irony at a WGBH-2/WGBX-44 pledge drive be to exhume and broadcast old tapes of the late David Ives imploring viewers to "Make A Pledge To Channels 2 And 44! Call 1-800-492-1111! That's One-Eight-Hundred-Four-Nine-Two-One-One-One-ONE!!!!".
