Channel 3 to televise Coyotes' playoff game

KTVK will carry game 1 of the opening round against the Red Wings on Wednesday night at 7 PM in Glendale. Fox Sports Net Arizona will carry games 2, 4, 5, and 7, while Channel 12 will carry NBC's coverage of games 3 and 6 (both in Detroit). If there is a conflict with the D'backs on FSN-AZ, baseball will be moved to an "alternate channel or broadcast time" (read: tape delay).

I thought AZ-TV had the Coyotes' over-the-air rights this season.

Given that the Coyotes broadcast are produced by FSN, KUTP would have probably been their choice if they didn't have a Suns game scheduled for tomorrow night, and KSAZ probably doesn't want to pre-empt American Idol, so Channel 3 must have stepped in with some money to carry it. It's hard for me to understand, because I believe Channel 3's lineup of Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz probably attract more viewers than even a playoff hockey game, and AZ-TV needs all the promotion it can get, so I don't understand why they chose 3 (unless 3's close relationship as the City of Glendale's TV promotion partner came in).

I'm guessing there will be a lot of hockey viewers tomorrow evening. There are a ton of fans, like me, who love hockey but don't like that very long trip from the East Valley to West Glendale at rush hour. Would be real nice if the rest of the playoffs would be OTA.

According to the team's press release, the game's coverage will be produced by FSN-AZ, as opposed to just picking up the Versus feed.

I don't know if the AZ-TV deal only involved the regular season, but they have to be pi**ed over this. The City of Glendale has no (or should have no) say-so over TV matters, so either the NHL might have stepped in, or the AZ-TV deal expired on Sunday and the team was free to sign with anybody.

Also, FSN-AZ has a D'backs game tonight and maybe it was too late to set up a second channel to move that game to on short notice. The D'backs might also have said "no tape delay tonight."

This is off topic, but I wrote about this on another site: how could the NHL start a game at 10:00 EDT? Sure, it works out better for Phoenix Metro. You don't have a ton of hockey fans driving in the after-work rush hour crush. But what about the children who live in Detroit? They can't stay up that late to watch their Red Wings. I think the NHL should have started the match at 5:00 Phoenix time.

We should be glad that for once, start times were not dictated by
"national TV" (read: the all so blessed east coast). ::)

Aren't there also early-round NBA playoff games--ones that are not
part of national OTA or cable packages--that have start times which
are "normal" for the time zone of the home market?

Speaking of Channel 3, do they no longer show D-Backs games?

Nope, since 2008 it's all Fox Sports Arizona (and now Fox Sports Arizona PLUS), all the time.

From www.foxsportsarizona.com: "FOX Sports Arizona ... is the exclusive cable television home of the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Coyotes, Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Cardinals, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University and Phoenix Mercury."

I remember when they switched that...

a) it was a 10 year deal
b) they said that being a cable channel, FSAZ had better penetration into northern Arizona than did 3's translators, which makes full-on sense

And, most importantly:

c) Fox Sports offered more money.

Probably much more lucrative than the 20 viewers that were gained in Northern Airzona. :D

IIRC, Belo didn't exactly try hard, if at all, to keep the D'backs or Coyotes. Something about Dr. Phil being more important to their core audience than sports. And since their core audience is women...

But now that Fox owns the rights, I don't see why they couldn't put some of the games on Channel 45 when there's no Suns conflict.
