Channel 5 is off the air

A few questions, though.... Doesn't channel 5 have a backup transmitter? Are they even necessary these days? How about the other stations? Just wonderin'

They applied for maximized primary operations along with making their current primary antenna a backup in early 2012, but no approval from the FCC yet. They're probably waiting, as usual, for Mexico to approve it.

I believe their current DTV transmitter/antenna dates back to 1999. I'm sure the station has inspectors check out the transmission line and antenna once a year, but at that age, even with routine maintenance, failure could happen at any time.

Too bad they couldn't have used the Westward Ho tower. But from what I read, they haven't used that location since 1960 when they moved to South Mountain.
I know other cities have backup transmitters on top of skyscrapers. The Empire State Building in NYC prior to 9/11 had a backup for WCBS, which is now the primary tower site for most NYC TV stations.
