Channel 5 - (not 12!) News on WLW

About the only thing WLW used from Channel 12 was the weather guys because they dont need the Local 12 news team when WLW has its own news Department. If any of the 12 news people appeared on WLW was during interview segments with the hosts on air. Channel 12 news anchors are on 55 KRC and i Belive on Mix 94.1 in the mornings.

Corporate doesn't control 700WLW nearly as much as most people believe. Darryl Parks has an astronomical amount of local control, and is an extremely trusted Program Director within the Clear Channel family. Never know... this may not be the only "big surprise" being cooked up in Kenwood. A guy like Darryl, never know what's on the next thread up on that sleeve. You might be pleasantly surprised. Stay tuned!

What does this mean for the relationship that Channel 5 has with the CBS stations in town, where they provide weather for GRR and B105? Will Ken Broo continue to do the Saturday afternoon shift on GRR? Or could Ken pop up on 700 to fill in on some of the sports talk shows?

I believe the CBS radio stations also have different television partners. I WLWT-TV weather forecasts on WUBE and WGRR, and I hear WXIX weather forecasts on WKRQ. I'm not sure about WAQZ.

WLW Programming...Autonomy don't mean much

I don't care how autonomous the PD at WLW is...the talent at that radio station lies between the breaks, with the talent, not in the PD office. The imaging and packaging of that station is embarrassing when compared to the clean, understated elegance of a WGN, KGO or even WIBC. The fact that Covington no longer looms over WLW hasn't meant much in the way of positive change. I can almost hear the blood dripping off of Jim Cutler's mouth as he reads that stuff. Yecch.

Re: WLW Programming

I don't know much about the "understated elegance" of the promos at KGO, WGN, and WIBC, but KGO is number two in their market in revenue (to KCBS) and runs an hour of medical advice each afternoon, WGN's been verging on losing its number one revenue position in Chicago and was reported to have 87% of its audience over 44, and an Emmis corporate presentation on all their stations was bragging that WIBC's FM sister station was #3 25-54, which implies that WIBC is worse than #3 in that demo.Every one of those stats is inferior to what WLW is doing in this market. The stats point to radio stations skewing older than they would like. (Advertisers pay much more for people under 54, probably because they're ageist pigs). At times over the years, WLW's demos have been remarkably young for an AM News/Talk station. This has not been historically easy for such stations, and stations in other cities have long shown interest in WLW's demos. One aspect of attracting those demos is promos. So I wouldn't expect WLW to start promoting itself like the Buick or Lexus of radio. Metaphorically speaking, they're going to keep telling people, "F--- yeah, we've got a Hemi!"

WLW Programming

It's the talent that gets it done at WLW. It's the talent that does not quite get it done at WIBC, KGO, etc. Any amount of marketing savvy can't help a roster that doesn't have the goods. Conversely, any amount of ball peen hammer theatrics won't hurt a roster that has the talent. If you put WGN's packaging around WLW's talent, you'd have more shares on WLW, guaranteed...because you wouldn't be annoying everyone that isn't impressed by that crap. For every person that thinks that stuff is cool, there are five that think that it's so much BS.

Doesn't Have to be WGN...

I pointed out WGN as a successful example of a station that does not use loud-mouthed braggard imaging to get the job done. And say what you will, they are still the number one biller, and Tom Langmyer knows how to get the demos where they need to be. He's only been there about a minute...give him time. Their current imaging (since Tom's arrival) does not sound old at all.And that's not the only example of straight-forward imaging that is getting the job done. Check out WHLO and WPGB right inside CCU. Their imaging sounds engaging and hip, without being overbearing.

Since we're talkin about em.....Nick Digilio on WGN weekends is GREAT! Pop culture with just enough edge to make the regular WGN listeners gasp. I really enjoy his shows.I also like WLW...except for the god-awful Boshears and Jones.

I think you'll find that Digilio and guys like him are the future of WGN. Come back in two years and see if it's so. It'll take that long...at least.
