Channel 6 observation

From a marketing point of view, I believe it makes sense. The only local show most stations produce today is the news, so I could see Channel 6 wanting to keep that image for Action News. Other than the local news, most people tune in to a specific TV station for the Network programming they offer, so from a marketing point of view, it seems that promoting your network rather than your calls as in either 6ABC or ABC6 vs WPVI6 or 6WPVI would better help your ratings, etc. Even in radio, most FM stations seem to avoid their calls and go with brand names that use their frequency or a rounded off number to promote their station (B-101, 99.5FM, Sunny 1045, etc). TV is simply doing the same thing. If AM radio still carried mostly network programming as in the 1930's and 40's vs satellite programming from different sources, today you might have heard them say tune in to CBS1450 for WILM or NBC950 for WPEN, or Mutual610 for WIP, etc.
