Channel 69 in Hartford (Pax)

I just received a signal on 69 last night, pretty clear, it was a Pax affiliate unfortunately. The good thing is that it had normal sound, as opposed to channel 26 which I could never watch just because that awful sound would drive me nuts, as if there were anything on Pax I'd want to watch.

Anyone know where this channel is coming from?

I am not from New England, with a little searching I came up with this educated guess..

Actually an old page..I would guess by now channel 69 is "i" and no longer carries WJAR-10 news
Edited by TimL on 03/10/06 02:39 AM.

Thanks, I should've done that first huh? Not sure why it was coming in so clearly, didn't notice any other Providence channels at the same time. And yes, it was "i".

Where are you at? I'm in New Britain and I will receive a weak color signal of them here if I have my antenna facing the right direction. They are licensed to Block Island, RI and are a portion of the Providence/New Bedford market. Their transmitter is located in or around Exeter, RI, which may explain why you're getting them and not the other Providence area stations. (I believe that WEEI-FM 103.7 of Westerly/Providence also has their transmitter nearby.)

Yup its up in Ashaway, near the CT line on a tall tower.

I'm in the south end of Hartford. Maybe I've just never noticed them because I don't point my antenna in that direction.. but it came in again last night. Then again, so did channel 25 from Boston and channel 27 from Worcester. But I get a decent signal for 69, not that I'd ever watch the "i".

Wasn't there supposed to be a low-powered station in Springfield on 69.

There was -- in the 1970s, WWLP establised a low-powered channel 69, so they could carry Red Sox games on 69 while they show regular NBC programming on ch.22. The feed was taken directly from WSBK, and the station was on the air only during the games (though sometimes, they forget to turn it off when it's over -- feeding WSBK's reruns through).

Channel 69 closed down sometime in the 1980s -- the "UHF Morgue" site has more on this channel (look it up).
