Channel 8 Interview with Russ

Saw this on this morning's WFAA 8 news, they are doing and interview with Russ on the 10 pm news tonight. Will be interesting to see what they ask him.

I imagine it has to do with the slain Dallas Police Officer - Senior Cpl. Norman Smith who died Tuesday night in the line of duty. Since Russ no longer has a voice for the police/fire foundation on 105.3 perhaps Susan St. James is giving him some air time to ask for donations.

Its Janet St. James bro.

Did anybody feel it was necessary for the new to interrupt regular scheduled programming to tell everyone that an officer had been shot while doing his job? Save it for the top of the hour newscast.

Janet... I knew that. Guess I watched too much McMillan & Wife in the 70's.

Im the son of a now-retired DPD officer, I agree the local media has a "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality and its gotten worse with Fox4, WFAA and CBS 11. I think alot of this can be traced back to the late 80's, when it seemed like cops were being shot and/or killed every other week. But I also agree on the sheer idiocracy local channels have sunk to in reporting. This is another example of why digital subchannels on the OTA side need to be used for breaking news purposes and leave evening programming alone.

Just saw the story about Russ. How nice that it started out with him getting out of the General Lee and spitting juice. Very classy Russ.

The only newsworthy portion of the piece was the part about the donation to the officer's family.
Other than that, why is News 8 even bothering?

They said they caught up with him at the benefit concert at Joes. That was mid December.
I guess that means it wasn't worth airing until he did something to get noticed again.
Making the donation.

I was a fan for a long time, but after years of listening to him treat everyone around him like crap, it got tired and old.
It was time for him to go.
Maybe someday he'll come back. Maybe he won't. But I don't see anyone spending that kind of money to get him back on the air. Seven figures? Not in todays radio business.

So that was the big interview? The exclusive Channel 8 got? And he wants everyone to know he wasn't fired. So...why is it the station flips formats and keeps Jagger, a non-sports talk show but they don't keep Russ. Dude, you got canned.

I think you hit all the points well and made a good argurment. I agree with ya, the guy has lost his way when it comes to product and most certainly be wont back for anything in the seven figure range.

I also caught the package and found the general lee/tobacco spitting played up to the stereotype of what people think of him...

I think the most telling part was at the end where Janet said that Russ knows that his "listener's" foundation can not survive long without "listener's".

My guess is Russ told Janet his plan off-air/record, and that last comment was a wink, wink to those wondering if he is going to return anytime soon.

If I was a betting man, Russ is gonna negotiate a payout of his contract so he can get back on the air somewhere.

Russ Martin will be back on the air here in DFW before the end of 2009, possibly back on 105.3 when the sports format fails due to too many sports stations in the market.

The interview was complete fluff. Nothing new that many didn't know. I am sure he called Janet because his trial is coming up soon, and he wants publicity. I guess he thinks he's Micheal Jackson. As far as him being back on the air on the edge etc. They will not meet "his "standards or his pay. He is a black sheep, and will not return to prominence he once had. In short he is washed up.

Now he got his attention,he's a topic on this board, he accomplished what he wanted, but its the only thing he is capable of.

105.3 will switch back to KXXK ("The Groovy One") or "Star 105" before that happens. That's like saying Gavin will soon be promoted to head the entire local CBS cluster.

Martin could purchase one-hour weekend infomercials on various stations to plug the "foundation." Or, better yet, turn it over to Kraddick or Dorsey and let them handle it as their OWN foundation...that is, if the true intent is to keep such a foundation going because it has important community value.

Then again, true and selfless philanthopy doesn't have a benefactor's name attached to it.

"smirker" You missed Mike's point. He was referring to Russ's shameless self promotion in the name of being charitable. Was it coincidence that the interview occurred so soon after a heroic police officer fell in the line of duty or exploitation? We will never truly know, but the argument is there all the same. Russ has his minions write emails, etc.to keep his name alive and this thread is doing that very well. Its his last hurrah, then a few years later, the money evaporates and its back to Pizza Hut in Balch springs.

Speaking of missing the point...

The interview occurred BEFORE the fallen officer. But yea - no that was all about self promotion. You guys all keep waving your "i hate russ/105.3 flag". It's awesome and in no way sad.

Convenient that it was aired after the loss of the officer, you bet! And as it should be. If one person out there saw that and was notified of the foundation because of it and donated a few bucks, then that's kinda the point eh? But yea - the foundation would be better served to be hidden and out of the public eye, I hear that the best way to get donations.

It's not like the "fluff" piece glassed over his legal issues or painted him as a saint - it was all right there - mugshot and all. yea that was pretty self serving of him.

You can hate him all you like, but like it or not, whether you think the reasons are altruistic the fact remains that it is there and it does good.

Jesus - if It were called the Ron Chapman Foundation for Fallen Officers you people would hail it as the greatest charitable act this century and nominate the guy for a nobel peace prize, but since it has "his" name then it's questionable and warrants petty criticism.

A police officer dies in the line of duty, the foundation gives his family 30K to help get by and you guys still find a way to pick that apart.

I find it interesting that he always said he didn't want the attention for the foundation but he's on the air, the day after the policeman's death and they're flashing a copy of the check with his signature and the amount. The only way they had a photograph of the check was if he gave it to them. The piece they did on him didn't paint a very good picture of him. The piece was used to promote him, not the foundation, the day after an officer's death. Total lack of class.

Oh, and if it was meant to bring attention to how anyone could donate to the foundation to help, where was the contact information so people could donate? Didn't see that in the piece. He could have stipulated that be put out there when he gave them the copy of the check to flash on the screen.

Right on!! Donate 30k to the family of a fallen police officer - what a total classless bastard eh?

Really?? The piece didn't paint a very good picture of him but it was used to promote him??

Somehow, and this may just be common sense kicking in, I doubt he had control over the piece. I mean if he did, I'm sure he told them to bring up his arrest and show his mugshot! Self promoting bastard! Do people really hate him so much that logic goes right out the window? If ANYTHING, if people really need a reason to be angry about this, shouldn't it be directed at WFAA for airing the piece to begin with, since it was so classless.

He isn't even on the air anymore, so why exactly does "he" bother some people soooo much?
