Channel 8 Rochester Launches HD Newscasts

Channel 8 launches its HD newscasts today. Anyone care to speculate how long it will be before Channel 10 makes the switch to HD? Their ratings are likely to suffer being the sole holdout in SD.

I was about to ask the same thing. I don't know what's up with Channel 10 these last few years. They use to be so innovative back in the day and now they are lagging behind in terms of technology. They are not even aggressive anymore. I never thought channel 8 would beat them to HD.

Just received some newscasts from Rochester and wondering if 10 is changing soon? I saw an add for a new anchor and different graphics than were being used of the newscast. Also, the ad appears to be shot in 16x9 (letterboxed and pillarboxed over the air) - although I didn't see any HD commercials, outside of network programming (not sure if syndicated is in HD or not...).

With one exception - the live feed of Kelly Ripa at 9 AM - 10 has no ability to run any HD outside of network; in fact, they can't even do an HD weather-alert super over network programming, so when there's a weather alert, NBC gets bumped down to SD. Syndicated programming and local ads are all in SD. Heck, they're still shooting news on Beta, complete with flaking oxide on the tapes. Hubbard has converted other stations in similar sized markets (KOB Albuquerque, WNYT Albany) to HD; I'm not sure what's taking WHEC so long, but it's become glaringly obvious now that 8 and 31 have flipped.
