Channel 9, where are you?

I'd been attempting to pick up KCFG-DT for some time now, unsuccessfully. I should be available around Cordes Jct. (at the I-17/AZ-69 split for those not familiar with AZ.)

Over the weekend, I was up in Flagstaff and had my laptop with me, so I tried picking up KCFG from the COL. Nothing. No full-power digital signal, which is now licensed from Mormon Mtn. No STA digital from Mt. Elden. Not even an analog signal from Mt. Elden.

I've seen this kind of non-service from many LPTV stations, but never from a full-power station. I had read that KCFG was a money loser for KM Communications and that they were seeking a network affiliation for the station. (Yeah, good luck! Español, anyone?)

This is interesting:

I was just looking over their Digital Rulemaking Petition for KCFG and opened the local map link in the FCC TV Query. Instead of Mormon Mtn., they're looking to locate their transmitter where AZ-87 reaches the top of the Mogollon Rim, just above Strawberry.

Can anyone say, "rimshot into the Phoenix market"? Then petition for must-carry, and money problem solved.

Although I'm not a fan of Journal due to their Cheap Channel-like--or (C)BS-like,
if you prefer--corporate shenanigans, when it comes to engineering we all need
to stick together.

Is KGUN-TV Tucson aware of this? Would it impact their signal coverage?

Minimum VHF co-channel separation in Zone II is 304.9 km, or 189.5 mi. KGUN and the proposed KCFG would be 235.9 km, or 146.6 mi apart; too close by 69 km (43 mi). However, due to terrain, KCFG might be able to show no impermissible interference.

Even if KCFG can't make the interference argument, they might get special dispensation due to being a failing station, which would truly be ironic, because that was the justification Journal used to acquire KWBA, which normally would have violated the duopoly rule in Tucson.
