CHANNEL 945: BIG CHANGES SOON

Happened to look at the message board on CHANNEL945.COM and Ryan Drake, Program Director, left a message that happened to excite me.

Ryan Drake, PD- "Because of all the talk on how you feel, what you want, where we should go, what we should be playing, ETC. We are pleased to announce big changes coming very soon. Bare with us, but we will get there. Thank you so much for the support, and keep on posting, and speaking your minds. Stay TUNED....!"

Any ideas? I've noticed them sound a bit more LIVE on the air and adding more variety to the playlist similar to WiLD 939 in Lima. I think this could be pretty good...

What ya think?

For Channel to succeed in the long run, they need to be a full-blown Pop CHR and not a CHR Pop/Rhythmic hybrid. Z is gone. Let Hot have their dwindling audience(They once enjoyed high 6 shares), and OWN the CHR/Pop audience.
If they're being sold soon, this may be a good move to make an effort to put something good on 94.5, not to mention perhaps getting more $$$ out of the station. Their latest Trend was a 2.6...Kiss Country even beat them by a tenth of a point, so I am willing to bet that this lit a fire under someone's ass at 101 Pine Street. The only thing I can see limiting 94.5 is their signal. I know they upgraded to 6000 watts, but I still get quite a bit of static north of I-70, not to mention Sunny 95/WSNY out of Columbus bleeding all over it.
My guess would be to rename the station 94.5 Kiss-FM again and go full-blown CHR/Pop. I don't think anybody would get it confused with Kiss Country...I know I wouldn't. ;D

Actually that's a great point. I'm a big Rhythmic fan, and I would love for 945 to go Mainstream, but HOT 1029 does such a poor job at the Rhythmic format. 945 will occasionally beat 1029 to rhythmic hits, and it's not good for HOT 1029 to have their rhythmic power hits in "New Music". Kinda sad. If you think back to the history of our 945, they've always had that rhythmic sound. Back with The Beat, they did well scoring the audience of the CHR'ers and the Hip-Hoppers. No revenue though. KISS FM did better and actually beat Z in a few books. The mainstream sound with KISS did well because they broke the new music first and was a fun station. Great imaging (including jingles), and fun jocks. Valentine in the morning did well and it gave them an image. Channel 945 when they first launched was even better, but had more of the rhythmic sound, but broke the new music first, and they bragged about it. Can't say that anymore when a lot of the "New Music" for them should be in Heavy rotation. The morning show isn't too bad-- Dave And Jimmy, but when you go from that to voicetracking and boring music during the day, it doesn't do you any good.

My guess would be for the folks down at 101 Pine St. to totally reimage Channel 945 to being "The Hit Music Station". Play the hits and put them in their right category, none of the boring Heavy Rotation as New Music crap. Get some damn imaging, and if you can't get jocks right away, I wouldn't voicetrack the same 2 DJ's all day. Dave And Jimmy in the morning and the most hit music all day? Going back to KISS FM would be surprising, but I would definietely enjoy it if they did it right. We're talking-- real imaging (Dave Kampel or Joe The Voice Guy) and THE MUSIC has to be on point. 945 is a huge mess right now and needs to be straightened out. I have a feeling CC has it on their mind considering the bad ratings they've been getting. It's bad enough FLY 929 has such a jump in the books, even though it's far from competition. Channel is the only "CHR" in the market and should be wayyy up there. The signal's not THAT BAD.

Enough of me rambling, what other thoughts you guys got? I'm just an amateur. :D

I read this and I have to question the validity of power ratio's.

WGTZ after the change to Fly has proven to be extremely positive. The numbers are way up in every demo (even in the younger demo). And the money, is much further ahead then where it was nearly 2 years ago. WGTZ has already outbilled in Q1 what it did all last year...wow!

WMMX is up and down in demos. Fly did hurt the core audience as the research had predicted. What this has caused is WMMX to pull some older demos then what its formerly used to. Plus it no longer has the #1 hold on the 25-54 audience.

WDKF is in just a not so pretty situation. To equate with them flipping to something similar to WLWD would be ludacris. Take a look at the breakouts for WLWD and you will see its core demos slipping everywhere. And the money is falling off the books faster than water on a duck. Clear Channel should be extremely cautious before pushing DKF into a direction that WiLD has taken.

I like the rhythmic format. I used to consult a couple of rhythmic stations. Problem with them, they dont bill very well. They may grab ratings but its an extremely hard sell, even if your in Harlem.

Okay....

I'm not saying WGTZ sucks or is doing horrible. I said that WGTZ is doing quite well and is beating 945. Sure, it's not competition, but a typical Adult Hits format shouldn't be whooping a Clear Channel CHR. In a typical market, a Clear Channel CHR should be beating channels like that, or at least coming close. So it's not, that's fine. Would it be with KISS FM? Maybe if done right. 945 is getting beat by Kiss Country. It remains a problem. Kudos to WGTZ. They've found something that's doing well. For how long is the question?

I didn't mention WMMX at all because WMMX is a powerhouse Clear Channel station, and probably the one chosen by a lot of women now that Z is gone and 'DKF is doing a poor job.

WDKF is what I'm focusing on here. BIG CHANGES SOON really surprises me considering CC's been letting it slack for months upon months now. I guess, I'm just a big radio fan and I know what's capable of Clear Channel. Drake knows real radio, and he could blow it up, corporate rules over him obviously. Would he announce big changes soon unless he knew something?

I don't know, 94-5 has reimaged so many times its hard to take any big "changes" seriously, and if budgets are still frozen while the Clear Channel deal works its way through the courts, I can't imagine they'll be doing more than tweaking.

I think whatever changes are coming will have very little to nothing to do with what listeners suggested on the board. Unless they were already being planned.

It is like taking a request when you work from a pre scheduled music log... IF the song happens to be coming up on the schedule then telling the requester they will play it for them sounds like they are doing it only because the listeners asked for it.

So what's next? "Wild 94.5?"(hey..at least it works up in Lima ) lol!

Lets see here, a station that lost nearly 400,000 in billing in one year... Yeah, thats a perfect example station to follow.

Actually, they're doing much better this year and still doing outstanding in the core demographics. Kentucky, no offense, but I wouldn't hate on WiLD. They're doing big things to be in such a low market with high ratings and having to deal with CC's crap.

you have to remember jammin that mr. kentucky has some beef with CC Lima...either with some peeps that work OR he's consulting the star. he never has anything good or constuctive to say about CC LIma and specifically, "wild"...so don't let that bother ...and yes..looking at the general ledger...wild is up in billing! you must be an insider...lol...

I dont hate CC Lima. However, im just stating facts. Its a proven fact that WLWD was down 300k last year. Its also a proven fact that you cant sell 12-17 year old girls with red hair and apple bottom jeans, but if thats what they think they can do, then so be it.

Lovejamminoldies, If im not mistaken, you last year even questioned what they thought they were doing. Only trainwrecks go from Dufflebag Boy into Matchbox Twenty, but if you think thats what hit music should sound like, then so be it.

might want to check the playlist again....matchbox 20? really? LOL...might need to stream them again...no, you'll hear daughtery, gym class heros, plain white tee's(which DOES get me)...but it pretty much leans rhythmic. anyhow...if we keep chatting about lima...lets move this to the ohio board.

where do you get your "numbers" kentuckymedia???
