Channel 98

What is going on on Channel 98?

I've sent e-mail to Siriuis twice now telling them that all of their channel lists and even my own radio display still list Channel 98 as world-music "The Globe", when it has been Rolling Stones Radio for several weeks now. Sirius replied insisting that the listings are not in error and that Rolling Stones Radio is a temporary station. Is anyone else still seeing "The Globe" on your Channel 98 display?

It's been like that for quite some time now. Besides, Rolling Stones Radio has been on there for months now...even before the last channel reallignment back in September. In fact, I don't even think "The Globe" (the rebranding of another channel) has even had the opportunity to be aired yet.

Sirius really needs to put The Globe back on...not so much because it's sorely missed by everyone, but because it's a station that's promoted as being a part of the channel line-up. I'm sure there are a few Sirius subscribers that bought their system to hear the kind of music offered on The Globe as well.

Maybe Sirius should consider putting a channel on that's devoted to a block of one artist or group for a week or so, a month, etc. depending on the amount of material the artist or group put out. Call it "Sirius Tribute" or something of that nature. I love Elvis and the Stones and all, but is the average Sirius subscriber really listening all the time?

While they're at it, they should add a 90s hits channel, bring back Mexicana, and drop the talk off of Raw Dog and give it a better sound quality. Sirius is compariable to better than XM with everything else, but XM has them beat hands down in ethnic, comedy, and 90s programming.

I can see why with elvis, the holding company (Elvis Presley Enterprises) stepped up and signed a actual long-term agreement with sirius. With these "temporary" stations (Stones/E-street/ect..), its hogging up bandwidth that could be used for say, more sports play by play channels or even maybe, dare I say, more international channels. The idea of a "Legends" channel is an engaging idea that should be explored.

Don't forget a punk channel. Fungus kicks Faction to the curb unfortunately. Why does Faction play Metallica and rap? Sirius has hard rock and hip-hop channels. I want a dedicated punk channel. And not any of that Green Day New Found Glory crap.

New stream ideas -- for one thing, a "Legends" or "Tribute" channel would be a good idea

I think that a "Legends" or "Tribute" channel is a good idea.

In a similar vein, Sirius might consider a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame channel, playing nothing but music from inductees (as well as, possibly, VH1-style documentaries about those bands and artists).

Yes, bring back The Globe. And Sirius might do well to offer an African music channel. Also, roughly two or three years ago, I had a friend who said something to the effect that there wasn't anything on Sirius for her, as there were no Chieftains or Irish folk... It was just St. Patrick's Day, giving me the thought that maybe BOTH a folk channel and an Irish channel might make sense. (Does anyone else think Sirius might have goofed by cutting the folk channel?)

BBC Radio One was a terrific addition; something like that was long overdue. (Now if Sirius would only list that station's title-and-artist information on listener's radio screens.) I'd suggest additional foreign music stations, such as BBC Radio Two, BBC Radio Three, Capital FM, Virgin FM, XFM and/or something from Australia. (Re the latter, Triple J might be a good choice; so might an Australian CHR station.)

How about adding a fourth comedy channel focusing on humor and novelty tunes, a la Dr. Demento? (Core artists would range from Spike Jones to "Weird Al" Yankovic and beyond, with a lot of lesser-known artists included for good measure.)

I'd like for 75 Standard Time to be split apart into two streams, one focusing on standards and the other focusing on swing and big band. If I'm really "In the Mood" (pun intended) for Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, do I really want to sit through a Tony Bennett ballad -- not to knock that great singer -- or, heaven help us, Rod Stewart crooning "The Great American Songbook"? Similarly, 37 The Strobe could be split apart into two streams, one focusing on disco and another focusing on '80s and '90s dance.

On the News/Talk side, how about adding FederalNewsRadio, a/k/a www.WTOP2.com? I'd think that this station, which started on the Internet and migrated to broadcast radio in the Washington, DC, area and which focuses on both the federal government and on those doing business with the government, might be an excellent addition to Sirius's lineup. (Actually, this might be my first choice amongst any that I've listed -- okay, on second thought, why I edited this post, maybe it WOULD be too dry for non-government wonks. But it's worth considering, nevertheless.)

I've long thought that, on the liberal/left/progressive end of things, Sirius might do well to work out some kind of collaboration with Pacifica and its five flagship stations (in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston and Washington, DC).

I may have forgotten some good ideas I've had in the past, so maybe I'll add something next time I'm online. Time will tell.

And, of course, this begs the question, which streams would Sirius DELETE?

Be nice if Sirius could settle on a final lineup, once and for all. But realistically, based on Sirius's performance over the past couple of years or so, we can expect that every six months to a year or so, Sirius will add streams and delete others.

So, which ones to delete?

That might be a subject for another post, albeit a more painful one. (Who wants to CUT streams? It's more fun to propose new ones, methinks.)

I'm still confused...

Does this mean there used to be a Globe Channel that definitely will return? Or is the Globe something old that won't return, or a new stream that has yet to sign on?
