Channel 99-9 Flips To Rhythmic CHR

Was flipping through stations early this morning about 1:30am and noticed Channel playing "All Of The Lights" by Kanye & Rihanna... that whole set was filled with rhythmic such as Nicki Minaj and Tyga. The imaging has changed and it is currently jockless running the PC Rhythmic CHR log similar to 1067 KISS FM in Rochester. I'll keep you up-to-date on any new programming such as jocks and music throughout the day. I say, smart move by CC. The old 94-5 was always rhythmic-sounding.

One has to wonder if WDHT's success is making WDKF's move to Rhythmic a factor. It'll be interesting to see how this new battle shapes up.

Meanwhile, the new question is who'll be filling the Top 40/CHR void in Dayton?

WDHT recently scored an 8.3 in the book, only losing to K99. Dayton has always been a rhythmic town, and Channel has always been #2 in this market. When Z-93 left Dayton with only one CHR, Channel transitioned into a Mainstream CHR and immediately listeners went to Hot 1029 instead of Channel. ??? ???

I don't think anyone will fill the void. Click 1015 is the closest you're going to get to CHR with them being a Modern AC. I wonder if Mix 1077 moving the 80's to HD-2 is them preparing to transition into more of an Adult CHR similar to Mix in Columbus. The current rhythmic format I'm still hearing as of 8:00am during the Elvis Duran Morning Show is a Mainstream-leaning Rhythmic format. Playing mostly hip-hop and dance. They won't lose any listeners and they'll gain some from Hot. I wonder how much of a role Ryan Drake is playing in this, as he did announce "changes will be coming" after he got back in at Channel. I'll keep you updated!

As of right now, the music log during Elvis's show seems to be back to Mainstream CHR. We'll see what happens at 10 with Seacrest. Maybe I jumped the gun? Maybe they're only running rhythmic overnights which makes no sense. Very interesting. Hopefully R-I holds off on making this a headline for now. I'm trying to exactly figure out what format they're doing.

So here's the dirty lowdown:

Channel is Mainstream CHR from 6a-6p and then the other 12 hours, it's Rhythmic CHR. Both logs being Premium Choice. What I like/dislike:

Like:
  • They're being risky with trying to steal listeners from the powerhouse, Hot 1029.
  • They are going back to their old roots of playing rhythmic on that station.
  • The night show is a lot better than the previous one. Billy The Kidd was good, but then JoJo's show was absolutely horrible. They now have "Mack On The Radio" from Y100 Miami who should do a lot better against The Partyman on Hot 1029.

Dislike:

  • The rhythmic format is a little dry, not taking risks with some of the big rhythmic hits, and often just as repetitive as the mainstream music log.
  • It's not a good idea to be powering certain songs at night and not playing them at all during the day like Tyga and New Boyz. With CHR, people pay attention a little more than if it was Hot AC only playing certain songs at night.
  • There is nothing special about the either format. Honestly, I think it should just be the format Channel goes with permanently. They'd only not be playing a few currents and some of the old "mix format" gold such as Fall Out Boy and The Killers.

I'll keep you guys posted and will let you know this weekend what log CC decides to go with. I encourage you to listen to Channel both during the day and at night and tell me what log you think sounds better. Here's the Rhythmic log (10pm EST on Channel 999)

LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem
Ne-Yo - Closer
Iyaz/Travie McCoy - Pretty Girls
Katy Perry - Teenage Dream
Kanye West/Rihanna - All Of The Lights (not heard on Mainstream)
Gym Class Heroes/Adam Levine - Stereo Hearts
Enrique Iglesias/Pitbull - Tonight
Dev - In The Dark
Usher/Will.i.am - OMG
Nicki Minaj/Rihanna - Fly
Pitbull/Ne-Yo/Afrojack/Nayer - Give Me Everything
Nelly Furtado/Timbaland - Promiscuous
Bad Meets Evil/Bruno Mars - Lighters
Britney Spears - Till The World Ends
Flo Rida - Good Feeling (not heard on Mainstream YET but predicting that'll add it soon)

So... 1-2 songs that aren't heard on the mainstream format, and you're not hearing The Script or Taylor Swift. Dayton is a rhythmic town anyway. I say go with the rhythmic format and keep things pushin'!

I highly doubt CC will make Channel a total Rhythmic CHR. IMO HOT would crush them like a fortune cookie. HOT has at least a live/local presence in two dayparts as well as 10 long years of heritage with the listeners, it's locally programmed, and a presence in the community. Channel has somewhat of a heritage, since they were on 94.5 as "Channel" for six years until they made the move(March 30, 2005 was when Channel 9-4-5 went on the air). However, Channel has NO local air talent on just yet(Even though Drake is behind the scenes), and nobody out in the community. IMO CC will keep Channel PC for awhile, if not for good. I have zero idea why they hired Ryan Drake back when they've done nothing with the guy. Also, from the last 12+ I saw, it looks like Channel is doing the same numbers that Z-93 was doing around the time of its demise. Channel is good as background noise, but for a REAL CHR I check out Q102. Q102 is an AWESOME station. Q comes in clear in Dayton, so why not listen to them? They play the similar style of music that Z played, and have ALL live/local dayparts from 6A-Midnight. Anyhow, Channel is filling a void in the Dayton market with Top 40. They COULD lean Rhythmic, but IMO HOT has those listeners locked up, so why bother? I listened to Channel quite a bit Monday and overnight into Tuesday, and it sounded straight Top 40/CHR to me. We'll see what happens with Channel.

Alan, I tell ya, I always look forward to your posts! Hot has been doing a lot better ever since Scott Sharp took over. I don't like Russ Parr mornings or the fact middays is jockless. I feel Scott's show is a bit dry compared to Premium Choice's JJ on Channel 999 but Scott is an excellent jock, and he's live! The Partyman is a really good night show and maybe the only live and local night show in Dayton now, if not one of the very few left. They've put Drake on the air part-time and also for remotes, but so far, they've given him no control over the station. He was PD for years, I think he deserves that role back, but you know, they're seeing the best ratings they have in years with Premium Choice, which is like you said, the old Z-93 numbers. Q102 is a great station and they've been leaning more CHR each month. They won't touch any hard rhythmic though, and that's what CHR is becoming. Dance and Hip-Hop. I listen to them every so often as JonJon, one of my good friends often programs the music, along with Brian Douglas. KISS 107 has been doing better with keeping up with them though. That station also has been sounding good. I wouldn't mind Channel being straight CHR if they dumped PC except for overnights. That music log is so dry and repetitive, it doesn't belong on 24/7. The rhythmic format isn't much different, but I like it better. Btw, you're right about it sounding CHR. The rhythmic format isn't much hotter than the CHR one. It's basically CHR with more dance and no rock. I predict they'll get some local programming by the beginning of next year.
