Channel change

CBS3 announced today via bottom screen crawl that they would be changing frequencies as of August 1. It also stated that OTA viewers will need to re-program their tuners to lock in the new channel, while cable folks don't have to change anything.

Same thing is true at WCBS-TV 2 in NYC. The same crawl across the bottom of the screen, saying if you get your TV over the air from an antenna, you need to re-scan at 1pm on August 1. But if you get it from cable or satellite, everything remains the same.

I wonder why both KYW-TV and WCBS-TV are changing channels on the same day? WCBS-TV is moving from Channel 33 to 36. KYW-TV is moving from 26 to 30. But of course, on air, they never refer to these numbers. The PSIP will keep WCBS at 2 and KYW at 3.

As long as both stations are remaining on UHF, there's no need to specify the RF channel number. Reminders to rescan are enough.

I believe that stations are jumping in groups and have a certain window to do it. It's like leapfrog. Stations clear out their frequency so that another station can move there in the next round. I also noticed that WNJS/WNJT are moving on Aug. 1st according to something I saw on the bottom of WNJS's screen. (aren't WNJS & WNJT the same thing now, sharing the same RF and tower in Camden County?) Not sure why they don't program different programming on 23.1 & 52.1 and get both must carry on cable & satellite (and do the same in North Jersey with 50.1 & 58.1).
