Channel Drift

One channel that has really irritated me with their drift is the Travel Channel, since they switched mostly to paranormal shows.

Walmart has MTV t-shirts with the Music Television slogan, which males sense for people who watched it in the 80's. but it's also on kid;s clothes, which makes no sense, and there's a lot of the programs that kids shouldn't be watching as they are now.

Now, MTV has a one hour show called "I want my 80's!" Maybe they should put that on a t-shirt.

MTV likely began to drift because the novelty of music videos wore off. It was also related to the problems the CHR format had in the 1990s.

That's right in able for Disney+ to diversify is content they also have released concert specials from Olivia Rodrigo and BTS. It's a case of a streamer following it's original intent to broaden content besides it's initial plan to play mainly Disney and 20th Century movie and TV Library on it's platform.

For some of the examples in this thread, the channel doesn't serve a purpose the way it was originally launched. MTV still has music video channels, but they are on Pluto. But, in the age of YouTube, you can watch any music video you want at any time. Why sit through songs you don't like when you can just watch the ones you want?

For The Weather Channel, the internet and smart phones killed that. I can get real-time weather conditions, and if I want coverage of severe weather, local TV does it better. If there is a hurricane or other disaster, chances are you can find a local TV channel that is streaming and providing better coverage than TWC.

As for other channels, it is all about money and ratings. There was a time when having a cable channel was a license to print money due to carriage fees and advertising, but that era is coming to an end. It was more profitable to KEEP the channel space than to shut it down as the networks changed/evolved/whatever. But even with carriage fees, they still needed to attract an audience to increase profits.

Here's a rough one; less channel "drift" and more channel "jerking the wheel into oncoming traffic"-

On August 1st, Animal Planet is running "Jackass Number Two"

to be fair, there's stunts they do in that movie involving animals including them trying to scare Bam Margera with snakes.

so in a way, it's sort of on brand with Animal Planet's animal theme.

An update- even though the listings on the Animal Planet website showed "Jackass Number Two" (the title of the second feature film), what actually aired was "Jackass Shark Week 2.0", the second annual installation of some of the Jackass cast performing shark-centric stunts
